4 months out and still can't eat certain foods

I'm not sure if I'm upset or mad because I can't eat meat? Or a slice of bread? Even pulled pork I can't eat I get a full feeling from a small bite and like it's stuck. Things don't even taste the same anymore. Drinking water feels heavy but I can drink it if it's really cold and split with Gatorade. I have lost 50 pounds in 4 months but sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing. Anyone else have these issues?

WELCOME to the Forum!!!

I couldn't eat bread for over a year. It would gag me and make me throw up. I had no problem eating meat but I had to eat a tiny bit at a time. Try cooking meat in a covered pan, cooked very long at a low heat with lots of water added to make juicy broth so the meat is very moist and tender. The meat should be falling apart and melt in your mouth tender. Eat slow and chew, chew, chew.

Fifty pounds in 4 months is great! Congratulations!!!

Which type of surgery did you have? The gastric bypass? Tell us more about yourself. If you had the gastric bypass then your tummy probably only holds 2 ounces now. This is a good thing and it will take approximately a year before your tummy will gradually stretch enough to be able to eat a small meal comfortably. By this time you will have lost a great deal of weight.

Bariatric surgery saved my life. I have no regrets! I ate very little food at a time for over a year. Just a few bites made me very full like I ate Thanksgiving dinner. This is what it took to drop the weight off of me. I still have more to lose but I feel like a normal person now. Life is wonderful! :)

Good luck!

I agree with everything that Cheyenne has mentioned above. Please complete your profile so we can see how you are doing, etc.

I am 1 year 3 months + post op.

Yes, my tastes have changed. This is common post op and forever. I still cannot eat any amounts of bacon (well maybe a nibble but not more) or pork (again a very small amount). But I can eat chicken, steak, lamb, but not a lot. 3 ounces still fills me up and leaves no room for anything else.

A breakfast now can be 2 eggs and an English muffin. However, this is a huge breakfast for me and I am stuffed.

OUr biggest challenge is to not eat too fast and not eat too much. I have had dumping syndrome a few times and I do try to avoid it. Sometimes it is simply the food being too rich that set me off or sometimes I simply ate too much.

You will also find that you have a lot of gas. I know I am burping as I begin to fill up. It is a fact of life with this surgery.

So, do not be discouraged. You need to retrain and eat slowly and not a lot at any one meal.

Yes, I have difficulty getting liquids down. So have a sippy cup and sip sip sip all day long.

I cannot have a breakfast with a cup of coffee; well I try and I am full. But , if I wait the designated 1/2 hour or so between liquids and the meal both before and after I do better.

I still come up dehydrated sometimes. So getting the liquids in be it water, milk, coffee, SCOTCH :) , juices ( such as diet cranberry) or your protein shakes are all very important.

Best wishes,

Ralph

Hi
I am about 6 wks out and tried beef (fork tender falling apart) and ate 2 oz but felt bad after. Chicken and fish are ok. I was told to hold off on pork as it can me difficult for many people. I really hope the beef gets easier as it is one of my favorite things to eat. But I will be waiting a few weeks to try it again. I have heard that some people can never eat bread again which is good and bad I am not ready to try it yet myself. And the pulled pork - did it have bbq sauce? If so it could be the sugar vs the pork.

one month out, lost 25 pounds, vomiting constantly, nothing tastes good liquid or solid. Fear of being dehydrated all of the time. Any suggestions on a palatable protien drink? Can only keep down a little bit of ensure high protein

any encouragement out there?

You should get medical help, quickly. You could be having strictures that have closed up your pouch. It's an easy fix with an endoscopy. I had it done 3 times. Dehydration is dangerous. An IV will make you feel like a wilted flower standing tall again!

I am 9 years post-op and still won't try beef (other than ground beef) because the beef proteins are too long and take too long to digest. Try some of the canned deviled meats like Underwood, or you could try the baby food meats. My best advice to those newly changed is to stay off solid foods for as long as possible. Baby food and/or a food processor are your friends.

I had RNY 11/14. I still can't eat chicken except for the breast. I can't eat Chinese food and I can't eat bread or pizza crust. They make my stomach hurt so bad, it feels like its being squeezed. I can't eat hard boiled eggs and sometimes scrambled eggs make my stomach hurt as well. I also have a hard time eating leftovers.

You will find that your tastes do change.

To this day, I cannot have bacon. Even a small bite will make my stomach queasy.

Pizza is too rich. I can get away with having one slice but it better not be an oily/greasy slice. I would get sick.
Two pieces will make me sick.

Eating vegetables is still an issue with me. I burp a whole lot when I eat too fast. I burp a whole lot when I have raw veggies like peppers. I love peppers. So I have just a few pieces and stop.

Eggs for me are fine. I have two softboiled eggs each morning as my breakfast. They do fine with me as does hard boiled eggs.

A caesar salad is fine but not a lot.

The key to understand is there are going to be foods you will never be able to consume again without either feeling queasy or burping or even getting sick.

There will be foods you do well with.

There are foods that will be border line

It is DIFFERENT FOR EACH PERSON.

As indicated above I cannot go near a chinese buffet. It makes me sick.

However, I can enjoy a good quality sushi roll.

Best wishes

Ralph

Cheyenne - thank you so much for this information. I am a month out from surgery and I can not get my full amount of water in. Even with sips I get sick. I also get very sick and nauseated when I eat soft foods. I get sick drinking the protein drinks I loved prior to surgery. The same happens with the vitamins. I also get nauseated smelling certain thinks like brewed coffee, mouthwash, cooking meat and etc. Has this happened to anyone else?

The only thing I have come across that I can't eat is Buffalo chicken dip, I made it for a picnic I was having and decided to try it before anyone came and I'm glad I did, I felt really bad and ended up throwing it up, felt fine after that, thank God I sent all the leftover home with my guests
