Hey, I had my surgery 2 months ago now and I am still having nausea and throwing up but only dry is this normal? Also the doctors want you to go back to work right away and start exercising it is so hard to even think about being sick all the time, does anyone else have this problem and what are you doing?

I hope you are keeping track of what you are eating, you may be eating something that doesn't agree with you or you have become lactose intolerant, check with your Dr. And good luck

Welcome Gabrielle :) I have similar issues with nausea since surgery. I returned to work 3 weeks after surgery and was fighting the nausea at that time as well. I spoke with my doctor at my 1 month pre op visit and they prescribed me a dissolvable nausea med to take every 8 hours and a patch that goes behind the ear to inhibit the gag reflex to help stop the process. It works about 90% of the time. As far as dry...I am constantly drinking fluids whether protein or water so I haven't had much dry at all, I don't know if that is normal, you might ask your doc. I waited until I actually hit 6 weeks out before I started exercising and even then I have started off very, very slow. I just walk at the moment, adding a little more each day but making sure not to over do things. Yes, I still have nausea and bad days, and yes it isn't awesome  but I am feeling better physically and healing well even with the nausea side effect. I'm told it won't last beyond 3 months so I'm hoping it doesn't. I hope your able to power through and find a way to feel better! :D

I experienced terrible nausea the first couple of months after surgery. I have not been able to throw anything up since surgery, so it has been only dry heaves or spit. I was advised by my doctor's office that some people react to the surgery with having nausea. If you get motion sickness, you are more apt to get it. This fit me to a T, so I just suffered. Probably should have pushed for some medicine. After a couple of months it went away.

I just realized Gabrielle and Queen C that I had surgery the day before you on June 19th o_O I was so not paying attention :p

Anyway, update on the nausea. Spoke with an RN today and told her how frustrated I was with the same replies to my nausea...which always seem to be: "What did you eat?" "Are you taking small bites?" "Did you chew long enough?" "Are you eating slowly?" "Did you get enough protein?" "Are you taking your vitamins daily?" --Okay, I get that these are logical questions for bypass patients. I understand that but nausea 24/7 and being on track with everything and following the docs rules, these questions simply make me want to groan in frustration!

She agreed and told me that she thinks I have 'hunger nausea' and I went "huh?" Apparently it's a thing, like a real thing! She told me to add more 'good fats' to everything I was eating in the soft foods and to keep it up when I was able to handle solid foods as well. I kind of had one of those 'duh' moments... ..mostly because during this process I was so focused on hitting the protein goals and daily water goals and vitamins and whatnot that I didn't take a step back and think about my overall nutritional goals to make sure I was achieving an overall balanced diet, which of course isn't easy when your on mostly protein shakes and liquid foods but it is possible! If I can beat this nausea thing by following her advice that would be awesome! It's worth a shot anyway :)

Oh wow! so were on the same road to recovery! someone else has had the dry heaves too and it went away after a couple months, looking forward to that.

I totally agree! If we could kick this nausea stuff to the curb things would improve greatly!

Hi,I had my gastric bypass surgery back in June 2017 and I had nausea for a while and had to take pills for it. I hardly have it anymore. A lot of foods made me sick and felt like it was stuck in my throat. My dr. told me to try my protein shakes for awhile and then gradually start adding back other foods. It worked. So far I have lost around 60lbs. A lot of my medicine have been dropped. I hope you feel better soon.

It lifts my spirit to know that the nausea goes away! I'm still waiting for that to happen for me but knowing there is light at the end of the tunnel makes it easier! It's been 2 months since I had surgery so any day now would be wonderful but I'm realistic enough to know it may take another month or two before it decides to move on. Congrats on your journey so far! 60lbs is awesome! I think I'm a week behind you on my surgery date and I have lost 48lbs so far. It's wonderful you've been able to drop a lot of your medicine as well! Yay for this new lifestyle!
