How soon after surgery before you were back to normal?

I had gastric bypass on Oct. 24th...6 days ago. Yesterday I was feeling great. I even went to church. I rested the rest of the day. Today I am as weak as a kitten. How long did it take all of you to get back to normal, and not have weakness or pain? If it makes a difference, I am also 68 years old. Very frustrated today that I have been down all day.

I had my sleeve the same day and I also am still weak and so sore by the end of the day. Hopefully tomorrow will be better for both of us. We can do this!

Thank you. Yes, I know I can do this. The frustrating part is that in the first few days I felt terrific. I could putter around the house with no problem. I didn’t do much but I washed a small sink of dishes and picked up a little bit. Now, I am down and out. How are you this morning? I am a little dehydrated, so I am trying to get in extra water.

I am just trying to get around this morning. Going to use some ice chips to add some extra fluid in today. I decided to take the rest of this week off since I am still so weak. I’ve lost 14 pounds since the 24th. Not sure if that is normal or not. “Just keep drinking” ;)

14#’s....I think I am going to cry. I have lost 3 . You must be younger than me. I am retired, so I don’t have to worry about getting back to work. So far I have 20oz water this morning. I am working on it.

My surgery was on 9-11. I am now at 6 was and lost 40 #. The problem is I am always nauseated with diarrhea and at times so fatigued. Now I have liver enzyme problem. Does any one have this problem

It's a day by day thing. Check your BP and BS. Ask MD to run lab wok to see you liver enzyme,RBI.wbc,iron. Those may be a help in explaining the fatigue

Welcome to the group! Congrats on your new journey! Are you getting enough protein in daily? I know that if I have a day where I don't reach goal, I feel weak the following day. I hope your able to bounce back soon!

I’m 41. I’m also barely getting in my fluids. Maybe half a protein shake a day. I’m sure that’s why I am losing so fast right now. Would be okay losing slower if I could just drink enough.

I just had my bypass surgery on the 30th and I don't know if it's normal, but since surgery I have actually gained 6# my mom had the bypass surgery just 5 days before me and she also gained a little but is now losing....?

Yes it is normal for some people! Your body is still adjusting to all the fluids they pump through you during the surgery and hospital stay. Some gain quite a bit more than that, their body wanting to retain all fluids. It will pass and you'll start losing the weight soon. :)

Well, I found out why I was so weak. The day after I posted this question, I was hospitalized. The day of my surgery I was given an antibiotic shot of Cephatetan. I had what was called a drug induced auto immune hemolytic anemia. I started hemorrhaging profusely. My hemoglobin was down to 6.1....normal is 15. I had 4 blood transfusions. I was in the hospital a week. I am home now. Still have zero strength, but I am healing. Thank God. The first day I was hospitalized the doctor was not sure I would live through the night. Now I think part of my problem may be lack of protein. The whole time I was in hospital I couldn’t get the protein shakes down. Now I am working on it again.

I am so sorry to hear you have had such a rough time of it. Glad to hear they figured out what was going on. Hope it is smooth sailing from here on out. Get that protein in!

That is what I am working on now, Christine. Today I got 2 protein shakes in. If my lack of muscle strength is due to lack of protein, I pray I regain strength quickly. I see my bariatric surgeon on Thursday, will find out then what his opinion is.

2 shakes is great. That should help get your strength back in no time. After my surgery I had extreme nausea and was not able to get the shakes down. I had very little strength and had none of the problems you’ve had. I can’t imagine the hurdles you are dealing with. I hope your surgeon is happy with how things are progressing now. Let us know how your appointment goes.

Sounds like you are on the mend, so sorry you had to go through that, but just think positive and you will get through it. The other side is so much brighter than you ever imagined, you can do it

I had bariatric surgery, three months later I am just getting better, age does play a huge factor in recovery, just get lots and lots of protein. I do Adkins and Premeir, I cannot do the powder or the Isopure.
