heartburn is killing me

I am 2 weeks out and every morning I wake with the worst heart burn. Any time I eat anything other than water or protein drinks. It is the worst. The Heart burn meds don't work it takes 2-4 hours to go awake, which is also how long it takes to drink a protein shake. I have only tried eating broth, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, and I tried 2 oz of yogurt. Has anyone else had this trouble, and if you did what did you do?

I always ask is this truly heartburn or is it something else.

Most importantly, this MUST be discussed with your surgeon.

He/She and their staff should be able to work with you on this.

I take a prescription level 80mg pepcid each morning. What are you taking? Perhaps you need a stronger medication

You need to make sure that this isn't an ulcer or something else !!!

CONSULT YOUR SURGEON IMMEDIATELY.

Burping and gassing after eating is part of post op life. But waking up this way is troublesome.

got checked out by the surgeon he said it was actually my stomach spasming and had me take a medication to stop the spasms. this really helped. after about a week no further problems with that. now I am back to work. however I caught a cold so that hasn't helped much. trying to walk and stay as active as I can.

Carebear. You represent an important point for the forum. This forum is a great place to share and provide 'user info' but should not replace calling your surgeon. I'm glad you found out the issue and are feeling better.

thank you MLE I was just glad to find out what was going on and what I needed to do to fix it. Plus if I put it out there than if someone else has the same thing maybe they will talk to their doctor.

I am glad i saw this post because my RNY Gastric Bypass was done on 5-5-15 and the very next day after me being released from the hospital (5/9) I am having such horrible heartburn. Drinking water feels like it makes it worse. I called my doc office and was advised to double my GERD medicine. I am on Nexium powder.. 20mg (now 2 times a day). Well guess what, IT DOESNT WORK!!! I CANNOT sleep, i cannot drink i am miserable. I can burp though.

So my question is to all of you... do you get a liquid form of medicine or is it powder? If you get liquid, is it filled through a major pharmacy? I think this is what i need--liquid form and higher dosages. I was on Protonix 40mg 2 times a day prior to surgery.

Any information will be helpful. I see my doctor tomorrow and this is the first thing we are discussing.

I still get plenty of burps.

Be especially careful not to eat too fast; this creates severe "heartburn".

What is happening to me all the time is certain foods (veggies) create a lot of gas.

It is part of post op. We learn to deal with it.

I found out that there are certain foods that I simply cannot consume at all and others in very limited quantities.

You should be able to identify your "safe" foods; those you know you can consume without issue; again EAT SLOWLY.

I wish I had awesome advice for you but I had bypass, which negated any heartburn. I was on an acid blocker for a short time to combat potential stomach spasms after surgery, I hope that is not what your having. I would ask your surgeons office, that way they know your having issues and hopefully can give you something that will work to help. As for the protein, it really doesn't take long before you get tired of them! I have figured out through trial and error there really is something to both the taste and texture of the different types available. It is so individualized as well, based on where you and your taste buds are after the surgery. I tried most things on the market at least twice before trying the next. I've currently settled on 'Chocolate Peanut Butter' from Annex. I hate most things chocolate but this mixture is very light, with just a hint of peanut butter and is very thin. Keeps most of my nausea at bay and I can drink 2 16oz glasses a day and get 92 grams of protein. Also, when I got tired of protein drinks and broth, I added unflavored protein to thinner soups so that I could have a change in flavors. I hope you find something that works and that you get to feeling better soon!

Thanks so much, I really like the idea of putting protein powder in the broth.

I am having the exact issue, UP all night with acid reflux even in a reclining position, I feel so discouraged.
