What's the most recent book you've read?

I'm about half way through A Game Of Thrones. It's the beginning of a long series, but since HBO is doing a show about it I decided to start reading it. It's a pretty good book, kinda slow starting. I'll come back and give another opinion when I'm finished with it.

I highly recommend The Help. I read it before I saw the movie. It is incredible. Hard to put down. It's a bit different from the movie, but not much.

Just finished a book called One Good Dog. It is a great book about how an outcast dog (old pit bull/lab fighting dog) and an outcast executive find each other and become a man-dog pair in this world and find their way when everyone else has turned their backs on them. Humor, tears, commentary on society, action - excellent book with interesting twists. Pretty quick read with some windy descriptive parts but I found it good. Another good book was Sarah's Key. Also good. Very touching and moving. It revolves around a young girl during the Holcaust times and her attempts to get back to her brother whom she locked into a cabinet thinking she would return to him later in the day AND a writer who is doing research on the subject and her subsequent connection to the family in current times. Lots of tears and a real page turner.

Just finished reading Not My Cross to Bear an autobiography by Gregg Allman. Since I have followed the band and him since I was 15, there wasn't alot I didn't already know. A life of loss, love, music and coming out on the other side. A good read.

I'm reading The Sixth Man by David Baldacci, the most recent in the King and Maxwell series. Michelle Maxwell is incredibly ballsy and funny and capable. Also just started The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I think I'm going to like the author's portrayal of heaven. I only read audiobooks, so have at least 2 or 3 going at a time. Kim, I also like biographies. The last one I read was about Condoleeza Rice. Good one.

I've become interested in a new tv series 666 Park Avenue. When I learned it is based on a book, out I went to buy it. Book is by Gabriella Pierce.

It is one of the few books I've ever seriously considered not finishing. And I did finish it only because of the tv series. After completing the book, I'm wondering if it was optioned it only to have the rights to the title!

Not recommended.

Hey, Karenina,

I, too, like Baldacci. I will look up this one at my local used book store. I'm due for a trip.

What was so bad about the book, or didn't it match the TV series?

Apologies, Karenina. I should have provided at least a little information.

The book doesn't match the tv series at all. I am impressed at the tv developers who were able to come up with the series. They had no help from the book. The only connection I can see to the book is the manse on Park Avenue and the witchcraft/occult theme. Oh, and the title, of course

The book is: juvenile, disjointed, disingenous and gramatically challenging. Where subtlety is required, the reader is fairly bludgeoned.

The author writes of old money and uber wealth, haute cotoure and other rarified fashion environs, and witchcraft. She doesn't seem to have the least exxperience with any of those subjects.

Whew. This is the harshest review I've ever offered on a book.

I just finished a book called "Damaged" about a child in foster care and it discusses the the emotional trauma children go through when they are victims of sexual abuse. It was an easy read in some regards and hard in others. Supposed to be a true story. I am also wading through "Atlas Shrugged" again. I love anything by Clancy, Baldacci, and even Stephen King once in a while. I find I haven't been reading quite as much as I used to. I keep most of my books on a Kindle Ereader so I can take them with me. I really enjoyed the Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean Auel and I often go back and reread them. I liked the books by James Clavell too like Shogun, another series I go back and read from time to time. If anyone has a Kindle and wants some free books try www.bookbub.com They will send you a daily Email with offers, not all free but often greatly reduced prices. I got some pretty good books that way. To get you interested in a series or an author they will often offer the first in the series for free. I actually bought the Kindle for my husband who had eye problems toward the end of his life and this way he could change the size of the print and still be able to read. What a Godsend for him.

Joy

Right now I'm reading "Bullets don't die" by J.A. Johnstone. I'm a big fan of western fiction. Wm. Johnstone, Ralph Cotton, Louis LaMour, and Tabor Evans are my favorite authors. I also read alot of DIY and history books. Its a great way to relax

I just finished "Threat Vector" by Tom Clancy. Started a new one by an author I've never read before called "Abuse of Power" by Micheal Savage. I understand he is pretty good. I get a lot of free Kindle books and pay for only the ones I really want.

I am starting Ted Dekker's new series. It is a 4-part compilation. The first is called Identity, and it is a free download. The other pieces of the novel are being released a week at a time, and are $2.99 on Amazon.

Latest Reading

Believe it or not, I've been attempting to read "Les Miserables." I started out with an edition on Kindle, but halfway through I switched to a paperback edition translated by someone else. This newer translation is more readable and more understandable, although Victor Hugo is VERY wordy and often causes you to lose track of what's going on because he veers off on philosophical or historical rants. LOL It is interesting to see certain details that the play/movie leaves out and that can help you have a better understanding of some of the characters.

I am hoping soon to read "Allegiant" (the 3rd book of the Divergent trilogy) by Veronica Roth. And then "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. AFter that, probably back to some crime mysteries! :D

"Use Your Brain to Change Your Age" by Daniel G. Amen is an excellent read. It goes into how your brain is the most powerful tool you have and how to slow, even reverse the aging process; simply by using ones brain. I found it easily worded and light to read. I nice add to anyone's home library.
