At the hospital I was feeling really good. Went home after a one night stay at the hospital. The next 2 days there was nausea and attempting to get my fluids in was hard. The last 2 days meeting my fluid goals has been ok but getting the protein in is hard. When I wake up I feel good. Very little pain, drinking is easy and getting my first protein shake down isn't to bad. As the day goes on I have more abdominal pain, I feel bloated and gassy. I pass gas and burp but have not had a bowl movement since surgery. By the end of the day I'm miserable. After I go to bed it starts over again. Am I just constipated? Any advice?

I am two weeks out from surgery. I took stool softeners and it was almost a week before I had a bm. Evenings were bad for me too. Moving around helps but it is hard to do at first. It does get better. Good luck!

Everything you've described is normal. There is naturally more pain in the beginning because you no longer have constant pain meds running through your system and well, you allowed a surgeon to reroute your belly, it is a bit angry at the moment and doesn't mind letting you know how mad it is...as for the gas, you may have it for just a week or up to a few months, they put it in you to be able to perform the surgery, so your system has to work it out naturally, which unfortunately is highly uncomfortable. :( It is super hard to reach fluid goals in the beginning, just take your time and work up towards them. Remember your water and protein shakes all count as fluid. You also get to count yogurt, Jello, frozen pops and thin soups as liquid. If you go more than 7 days, I suggest the stool softener but remember that you were on a full liquid diet before the surgery, and are primarily on fluids right after, so they slow down quite a bit in the beginning and you should regulate once you've moved into the soft food diet. Congrats on your surgery, I hope the rest of your recovery gets easier and the pain melts away! Best wishes on your journey!

I had to take Miralax everyday for awhile. I'm about eight months post-op doing good now. It will get better first couple of months is the hardest. I'm now 9 lbs to reach goal weight. Lost a total of 145 lbs. Lost 70 before I had the surgery.

I also had problems going, and drank some warm decaffeinated tea that helped, at some point I used some meds because it got bad a few months in but once I got everything moving I was fine no issues now good luck

My doc recommended Milk of Magnesia for constipation. Very gentle and works fast. I also heard that some people become lactose intolerant after surgery. Try non-dairy protein shake like Muscle Milk.
