Gastric Bypass and chronic nausea and throwing up...

Hi, I'm new to this site and wanted to find out if anyone else is having major problems after gastric bypass, i had mine in may 2003, and have had to have a hernia repair every year since...i've also had emergency surgery a couple months ago for a perforated ulcer...i'm folowing my dr.s orders but keep getting passed off from specialist to specialist and cant stop throwing up almost every time I eat...anyone else have a problem like this and if so how do u cope...i', desperate for help for this...

Hi..I am new here also and I had surgery on the 11th of Jan this year. I don't know if this would apply to someone who had surgery so long ago but here it goes anyway. I have been having issues with throwing up after the first bite of food. I was told just yesterday that as soon as I do that I have to start over with liquids, purree, soft food etc...I can do that all in one day. Things in there get irritated and it gives them the rest they need then you try all over again. Maybe it could work for you too?

Hi, I had my bypass surgery 2 years ago on the 16th of this month. I have experienced problems with my surgery from day one. I still have terrible pains, nausea and throwing up after I eat. Many days I only eat crackers and toast. I have dropped 35 pounds beyond my goal weight and am starting to worry about losing to much weight. My surgeon did tests of all kinds, I have been to different gastroenterologist and they say nothing shows up on test. My surgeon last recommendation was accupunture, they have kind of wash their hands of me and I haven't been back for my 11/2 or 2 year visit and they have not called to check on me. I don't know what to do, this is effecting my relationship with my husband and my children and I am so tired of people telling me that I am getting to thin, this was not my plan. So, I feel for anyone that is suffering from this surgery. If I had to do it over again I am not sure I would.

Judy-First of all welcome to the forum and know you are among friends here. Secondly, I feel bad for you because of your struggle. My surgery is scheduled for 2/27 so I have not gone through the nausea and other unpleasant stuff and hope I never will. I think you need to get on the Internet and look for a support group in your area so you can meet with others who may be going through the same thing and can offer some sound advice. You also need to find yourself another bariatric medical professional like a nurtitionist who will be able to work with you on your meal planning. You have already had tests but I was wondering if any of them were for food or medication allergies. Please make sure to come back here to let us know how you are doing.

Hi , I have just joined tonight and was very interested to hear that people are having the same problem that I am having. I had gastric bypass on December 5, 2011 and I have had so many, many problems nausea almost everyday for two and 1/2 months and just when I think I am doing better tonight I feel awful again. But I have had several days of feeling really good and have been back to the gym and it feels good to start to be out there again i have been in the hospital 8 times since my surgery and it has been awful I would not wish it on my worse enemy. I hope now I am on the road to recovery. Had a real hard time with the protein shakes I just cannot stand them anymore. But my team has given me some awesome tips and a good shake to make for yourself is made with a scoop of frozen yogurt a few frozen berries, 2 tablespoons of carnation instant skim milk, about 1/2 cup of skim milk 3 ice cubes blend it up and yum it is awesome. You can use any fruit you want like banana, peaches or whatever. Enjoy.

Hi Kbrault, Welcome to the site. Sorry to hear of all the nausia, you are not alone, fortunatly I only have intolerance to certain foods but there are a few in my support group that have had the same problems you have had, I hope you have turned the corner on it, sounds like you found a tasety shake to drink, it took me almost 2 years to find a shake mix I like and now that I found it I keep some around wherever I go. Let us know how your doing. Tom

judy. i had persistent nausea and the dr finally put me on phenergan25 tid for nausea. It only takes on dose and I finally get relief.patti

tom what shake do you use. I found some 17gm protein,3 carbs, and 0 sugar that isn't bad at all...patti

Hi Patti, I use Cocho Rite, I get it from Bariatric Choice on line, they also have a catolog. It has 24 gm of protien, 5gm probiotic fiber, 3 gm carbs, 0 surgars and only 150 colories. I love the flavor, strawberry, bannana, capachino, and chocolate, they are smooth and creamy, I haven't tried the chocolate yet but I am sure it is really good too. Tom

the one I have is EASadvantage carb control...11oz. 80cal.patti

I tried the EAS I liked the pre mixed containers but not the powder so when I am on the go I can pick up some EAS at any drugstore, but the powder is so nice to keep in my work truck to suplament my meals when I am out for days at a time eating MRE's (meals ready to eat) when I am fighting fire, I really have to pick through them because they are heavy on the carbs/pasta but I weeded those out of my supplies because pasta really makes me sick.

How did the pouch test go? Hope things are back on track. There was someone on here that was a few years out that needed to get back on track, I refered them to you so hopefully you seen their post or the pm you. Take care. Tom

thanks for the referel. this plan requires committment and it has to be 100%. I can't help someone who doesnot have the mindset to go to any length. For mee the exercise componentnis what is lacking so I have committed my self to swim a minimum. the pouch test went well. It broke my carb cycle so I I am ever so slowy re-introducing proteins, I will not be defeated...patti

Re: Patti

I wasn't having nausea I would throw up and the doc figured out what the problem and fixed it yesterday. I had a stricture!
So I am home now and have already noticed the improvement! Yea!!!

Just wondering?

I had my roux-n-y, on Oct 11, 2011, have had a few episodes where nausea and vomiting come into play. Very careful what I eat, but was just wondering, will I ever be able to drink a carbonated drink again ??? Would kill for a diet cola, I tried letting the soda go flat, so no carbonation, but that's not cutting it ! If anyone knows, please let me know....BTW, down about -87 pounds so far.......WOOHOOOOOOOO ~~

Your doing great. As far as soda goes, you shouldn't drink it anymore ithe carbination will expand your pouch making it less effective at helping you feel full. The nutritionists and doctors also soda will increase hunger, I only drank soda once in a while so that wasn't too difficult to give it up, although a nice cold 7 up or root beer sounds good on a hot summer day. The choice is yours though, the WLS is just a tool and not a cure. Keep up the great work. Tom

hey tom patti here. pat 99 had her rny yesterday and when I talked to her she was sitting up in a chair trying unsucessfully to get a real person come an check on her beeping IVpump. i asked her check to see if she had fluids and that her IV line wasn't crimped. they had a perispheral line in her right had and she says they poked her unmercifully until they got that one in. she was pushing her med button and it must have worked because she started getting prty slurred. It is a worry in hospitals. Her niece was staying with her in her room and had just stepped out. As an old retired geezer I could think of a hundred things that could happen. she said they didnt pu her in a binder, or give her a trapeze on her bed. she told me about her weight and what if she fell from the chair to the floor!!! Well unlike the olden days whenI hadmy open RNY I wasa in the hospital for 6 days. she talked like they might release her on Wednasday. will keepyou posted..patti

Hi Patti, thanks for the update. I don't like hospitals either, I am glad she has her niece in there with her, I was by my self but I was able to get around ok on my own, it must be frustrating for her. Big city hospitals worry more about production than people I think, my hospital was very good about keeping tabs on all of us in there, I remember my pulse oximiter kept going off when I was sleeping because my breathing got shallow and resperations were too far appart, I think, they were in and out of my room all night, it was a whole wing for bariatric patients it seemed like, Medford is a fairly small town with two hospitals that serves a lot of rural communities. Recovery goes pretty fast now with the laprascopic surgeries, I think I went in at 5 am on a monday and got out at noon on that wednesday. I am glad she has her niece with her, she will be able to wrangle up a nurse for her if she needs on. Thanks again for the update. Tom

patti here.....pat called me this morning and she was hoping to get to go home today. she said she felt like she could do better at home than in the hospital. Even tho I had my RNY 8 years ago I was really lucky to be on a floor that was more of people like me. It is sad nurses don't get to determine how much help they nee for the acuity of their patients and slide ruledoes. the injustice services both the sstaff and pts....that's why mistakes are made and people get poor care. I was just fortunate. will let you know if she calls tonite...patti
