I am so thankful to have found this forum! I am pre-op about a month. I am planning to have surgery first week of April but I am still waiting to have psych eval and then obtain insurance approval. As a result of testing I have sleep apnea my doctor said two more weeks of treatments and he will clear me for sugery! Im feeling very nervous about this process. I am a 35 years old and I have never had surgery or been seriously ill at all. I have been overweight all of my adult life. I started gaining weight my junior year of college after the death of my mom and havent stopped eating since! I look forward to making some new friends and providing as well as recieving support in this journey!

    Hi Luvlvnlyfe!

I can so relate to the nervousness you are experiencing! It's a major surgery, but it's also very common and the risks are one in thousands. The benefits will make you very happy you had the surgery in the long run, I'm sure of it! Get your psych eval done ... it's worth it. I noticed that many people tried to discourage me from having this surgery, even though my health and my life depended on losing this excess weight! So beware the naysayers! Stick with the winners and the (LOSERS) and you will be fine! Keep posting, hon! :p

I am positive I will be happy with having the bypass, and dont care what anyone else thinks....it is my time to be healthy happy and be able to play with my kids without wanting to fall over cause i am so heavy!!! Hi All
I am new, a little nervous thinking about my upcoming surgery. In addition to my bypass, my surgeon will repair my hiatal hernia, It may result in an extra day in the hospital. Depends on how I do post op. I am not as nervous as I would be but my son-in-law had a gastric bypass almost a year ago so my daughter and my son in law learned lots of tricks on surviving that first month or so, I feel as if I do have that additional support. My family is supportive, I am the only obese family member. My mom and dad watch their weight very closely, my brothers, sister and sisters in laws all work out and are quite active. I have always felt like the ugly duckling. No one ever says anything negative to me, it is just the feeling of not fitting in. Enough about that, I am here and hope to share and find support from others that understand. I am having surgery on 3/12 - just over 2 weeks from now.

Hi and welcome!!! We are so glad that you are here with us on the site and can assure you that we have all been there with the highs and lows of emotions. The best advice I can give (being almost 4 mo post) is to make the best decision for you based on knowledge and prayers. I did alot of research, reading, attended support groups and listened to the pros and cons. And once my mind was made up I prayed to receive the strength, diligence and power I needed to focus and stay positive!!!

I did have bumps along the way including an additional week in the hospital due to complications which made me even MORE determined to make this lifestyle change for my Health and Well being!! I WAS an insulin dependent diabetic taking oral meds and 3 shots a day, high cholestrol, high blood pressure and a smoker.

I now AM 52 lbs lighter, no longer using insulin (only one oral med), good cholestrol & blood pressure and the best part of all is...I'm a quitter no longer smoking!!!!! I feel the best I have in my life, physically, mentally and spiritually. Do I still have down days....absolutely but this surgery was a gift from God for me and I truly pray for all who are battling weight, depression and horrible health problems. I certainly have been there and done that......but no more I am now a happy, healthy QUITTER AND LOSER!!!!

Take care, be blessed and definitely look to this site for support. It has been an excellent outlet for me and many others.....and enjoy be a LOSER;)

I am on day 4 of two week liquid preop diet. My moods are up and down. I'm actually doing pretty good, very little hunger. Was afraid I could not do it. Surgery 12/27/17. Dietitian told me to go to family party on Christmas Eve and take some butternut squash soup with me. I get anxious. Hope I made the right decision. Wish it was over. I am 75 yrs old. Encouraging answer welcomed.

Mary House my surgery is the day after yours! And I too am very excited, nervous and emotional. My pre op diet is 2 protein shakes and 1 meal of 3 oz of meat and a veggie. But being the holiday season it's been very hard. Protein shakes are not my fave, what are you doing to get those in?

Hi. Pardon the butt-in, but these shakes are really getting to me, too. Surgery (DS) is on the 21st of December (the day after tomorrow), and I am on day 13 of the pre op diet. The first week was two shakes, two Bariatric Advantage snacks, 64 Oz of fluids, and a "lean and green" meal (chicken breast and non-starch veggies). That went fine. This second week is 5 Bariatric Advantage shakes per day plus 64 Oz of fluids. I've not been hungry, but if I never see another one of these shakes it will be far too soon. I've tried adding sugar-free flavored syrups and the only one that helps is peppermint. Finally, about 2 days ago I realized that this is just one of those unpleasant things that has to get done along the way in order to continue this journey in the right direction. I can't really change how gross they are to me, but I can decide to power through. Drinking a little warm chicken broth after the shakes has helped. It's the consistency and the cloying sweetness of the shakes that get me, so topping off with something savory does the trick.

Welcome, to all of you, we are here for you, the first two weeks and the two weeks after are the worst but you will get through it, I had my surgery around this time last year and I am so happy I did it, it was alot of work and continue to be work, but so worth it in the end

So the whole point of the liquid diet, as I hope your surgeon explained, was to soften the liver to be lifted out of the way during your surgery, without causing internal bleeding. I think your doing awesome! Powering through would be harder this week as for you it is week two. I am similar in shake tastes, almost all of them are too sweet, too thick, and gagging to me. I could not stick with the Bariatric Advantage for it. I switched to unflavored protein powder and primarily did that in chicken broth. My surgeon told me later what a good job I did on my liquid diet, he had zero issues during the surgery. You can do this! It is hard, but worth it in the long run! Best wishes on your up coming day!

Thank you! DS urgery was Thursday and I was able to come home Friday. Doc said he wished all his patients prepped as well as I did - turns out my liver wasn't even a factor during the procedure, so as hard as it was, at least I know I did something worthwhile. I'm able to drink water and Isopure now, and I'm managing the pain pretty well with the liquid pain meds. Excited to not be hurting and to get moving more.

Thank you! Something weird I'm experiencing is that when I got home I noticed I'd developed a bruise on my right shoulder and over the last couple of days the skin in that area has become desensitized, kind of partially numb. It's the shoulder that has the referred gas pain as well. Anyone else have to deal with this?

I would just keep an eye on it, maybe they got a little rough on you during surgery, who knows what they do to us when we are under, the feeling you have in your shoulder may just be from the bruising, thinking positive thoughts
