Really Pissed off!

I have to say that I'm so pissed right now! I am 2 weeks out and the scale is STUCK! I lost 18lbs in my 1st week. Yeah, I know, I should be happy, but I have heard so many stories about people losing 40 to 50 lbs in their 1st month that I thought I would have done better than this. I'm drinking my water (crystal light) and drinking my shakes. I am so disgruntled and confused! What am I doing wrong?

luvmybanksboys. Hi my name is Tom.
You lost 18 lbs in the first week, thats Great:D! Dont get discouraged. What surgery did you have? Mine was the R-N-Y gastric bypass, me not knowing which surgery you had I can only tell you my experience with the Rue-N-Y. I averaged about 10 lbs a week for the frst 5 weeks then 5 lbs a week slowly tapering off. Every one loses weight at different paces and you should not judge your weight loss to mine or anyone elses.
If you are not going to a support group maybe you could ask your doctor about one in your area, I try to go to one a month. Most support groups are facilitated by a specialist that can answer many questions for you. I know sometimes when it seemed like I wasn't losing weight on the scale I was still shrinking out of my cloths, that was because I was gaining muscle and losing fat, which may be the case with you, your doctor should have the scale that seperates all that out (body fat, muscle, water by lbs and %) and if they dont weigh you on that scale request that they do and definately discuss this with your doctor. If you had the Gastrict Banding you may only need a band adjustment but not having that procedure I dont know much else than that.
Dont beat yourself up, you are doing great. Keep up the good work! Tom

luvmybanksboys-I think Tom's advice is excellent. Even though I haven't had my surgery yet I totally agree with Tom. Ev eryone loses and gains weight at different speeds and for different reasons. And everyone plateaus too. But regardless, do not be so hard on yourself. You are well on your way to a new you. Welcome to the American Bariatric's forum. Make sure to visit here often and let everyone know how you are doing. You are among friends!

My name is Lisa. Thanks to both of you for your encouragement. I just updated my profile to reflect my RNY, sorry I didn't do that before. it might have made answering the question a bit easier  As time passes all I can think is that the doc opened me up and sewed me together again. Nothing is happening and I don't know what to do about it. In this situation, unlike traditional dieting, i really can't make anything go faster because I'm not eating anything. It's like my metabloism has literally shut off. I swear i would have lost more by now if I had a normal stomach and just drank the shakes! I'm not particularly patient, can you tell??

Lisa-I have heard that some people actually gain weight for the first month after weight loss surgery, some as much as 20 lbs. It's just the way things go sometimes. Your 18 lb. loss is certainly something to brag about. Just keep the diet plan that was given to you and discuss any concerns with your surgeon on your follow up visit. Once again, congrats on 18 lbs. GONE. Please keep us posted Lisa.

Hang in ther Lisa, 18 lbs is great, having had surgery so recently your body needs time to adjust. Remember to write down questions for your Doctor on your follow up visits and if you have support groups in your area it is a good place to get to know people in all stages from before surger to years out. I went to two meetings a month when I first got my surgery. :D

I have had a similar situation. I'm losing so slowly, it's like Weight watchers results on a third of the calories. When I went to my support group I was so upset by people crowing about losing a pound per day or more. I lost nothing at all last week. What's wrong with me?

I had my RNY two weeks ago and I am down about 10 pounds. I figured my initial weight loss would be a bit slower because I had already lost 30 pounds since beginning the process back in September. I know the weight will come off, it's inevitable given the few calories I am consuming, but it took years to gain the weight. Also I have spent the past 6 years trying to find a way and a place to get this surgery done so for now I am basking in the joy of that accomplishment alone.

I am right there with everyone else! I gained 17 lbs overnight when I had my surgery. Started on dieurtic lost the water weight then lost 19 lbs in in 3 weeks and for the last 9 days have not lost an ounce. What am I doing wrong?

Relax!

You are only 2 weeks out and your body is going through a lot . You will hit patches were the scale stops for awhile and even goes up a little. My first month was not that great but I am down 130 lbs in 8 months and feel great. 40 to 50 lbs in the 1st month is crazy and not the norm. 18 lbs in the 1st month is great and you should be happy!

Thanks Everyone! I talked to the nutritionist and I'll pass this along to you all (please check with your own nutritionist before doing this!). She told me to add some protein powder to my pre-mixed shake. The extra protein will sometimes help to boost the weight loss. I went to the doc today. lost 3.5lbs in the 2 wks that I saw him last. 21.5 lbs G-O-N-E! YAY!!! x)

Yeah! Back on track. My Doctor and support group facilitator also said increase the protien. Their rule of thumb is between 60 and 100 grams a day, I average about 80+/-. Glad to hear your doing good. Tom

Omg! I am having the same frustration! I had my RNY on 12/7/11 lost 22 lbs until this date, the scale stopped moving! I actually emailed my doctor, she said everyone looses weight differently, and it is ok for the scale to stop moving and then it will start moving again!. I am very inpatient too because I have heard other people loosing a lot more weight than me.

Well this is my first post. I had the sleeve done at the end of Aug. and had done well up to about 3 wks. ago. Now I've come to a screeching halt. Not hungry can't eat regular foods like I should be, and overall energy level is in the toilet. What to do now? Was hoping for some insight from the pros. :(

I feel for you but think the posts are right...relax and just do what you are told(following the program). I had RNY on 12/29/11 and have only lost 16 pounds but my clothes are feeling differently. I had a hard time eating the creamy soups in phase 2 and wasn't getting all my fluids in and the doctor said this could cause a slower lose rate. Today I started on Phase 3 YAY!!..so I'm hoping I will be able to actually eat my three meals and will try to get my water intake up. Looking forward to see what happens in the next couple of weeks. Hang in there and remember we are here for support!!:)

I had the gastric sleeve December 1st 2011 and I was told by my doctor that they only expect you to lose between 20 and 25 lbs the first month. I lost 22 lsbs 2 weeks out and another 2 lbs by the end of the week for a total of 24 lbs in the first month. I am now at 7 weeks out and have lost 30 lbs (as of last week) and is hoping for more by the time I go to the doctor on Feb 3rd. So keep your head up and keep doing as you are suppose to do. Make sure you are getting the protein drinks in in the amount of proteins from the drinks, that's the main key. At about 1 month out I started walking and now I am going to the gym every morning to get a good cardio in for at least 30 mins. Try adding a little bit of exercise as well even if it is just taking a brisk walk for at least 30 minutes each day, trust me it helps.

@Mamatinat I am going to the doc tomorrow. I'll let you know how it's going then...

@Kitty I'm so glad that you and I are in the same boat! I really don't think that there is anything more frustrating than listening to others tell how they lost weight so fast and here I sit -struggling for every pound! Thanks for making me realize I'm not nuts!

When I look at my weight loss and I figure it all out, by the time I hit my 1 year mark I will have lost around 100lbs. That makes me feel better. Looking at the big picture, strangely, is more comforting than seeing how far I've come! I knwow that we all lose weight at different rates, and I know that I will plateau again. I guess I just didn't figure on it being so soon after the surgery.

I have been working out - did it every day last week - only once this week - sooooo very busy  but I will be back on track with that shortly :D I hav enever had much patience so this has proven to be the hardest thing I've ever done! thanks to all of you for your support. Even though we have never met it means more to me than you will know! :D

Milestones and hurdles

Lost 4.5 lbs in 2 wks. Not too bad. :D

I think I figured out where part of this frustration comes from. When i was originally looking into surgery (many moons ago) I went to a surgeon's seminar and was told by one of the speakers that we could see the scale drop by multiple pounds a day! For some reason that point came to me the other day. Not sure where they came up with that or if it was a selling point that they could use to bring more people on board. It seems a little unfair, in retrospect, that someone would say that, knowing full well that it probably will not happen to most of the people in the room. No wonder there are so many of us that are irritated! i'm learning not to lose heart in all of this. I was asked the other day about my weightloss and I am always upfront with friends and co-workers. Once I said I had lost 26lbs in a month it seemd better than just looking at the smaller increments. 26lbs in a month is really an accomplishment . I think, if there are some of you out there that haven't lost too much and are struggling in the beginning of your journey, that we should be proud of where we have gotten to. Even if it's only 2lbs in 2 weeks, It's 2lbs G-O-N-E! I think I have cleared this hurdle...not to say there won't be more but this one is behind me! Thanks to all who have held me high...YOU ROCK! :)
Lisa:cool:
