vitamins YUCKKK!!!!

My surgeon told me I had to take two chewable daily vitamins for the rest of my life. He didn't specify bariatric vitamins, which weren't available back then. In fact, using the label "bariatric" is merely a marketing tool. All that matters is what's listed on the nutritional label on the side of the bottle. Children's chewable Flintstones vitamins were suggested as an alternative.

But I found the high potency formula at Trader Joe's to contain the max amounts and they tasted fine. At first, I thought they were delicious, but after a while, I got really tired of the taste, so I just broke them into quarters, then chewed those without saliva until I could wash them down with water. That's what I've done for the last 14 years and my numbers are always fabulous.

Just read labels.

I also take separate supplements because women need more iron than men, and calcium to offset osteoporosis, and other supplements like Vitamin D. Check with your nutritionist (if you don't have one, you should insist on having one provided and covered by insurance, since you've made a drastic alteration to your digestive system) and take as recommended.

At first, pills and capsules may not be an option, but there are also liquid vitamins available. The American Bariatric association probably offers guidance on their website.

Bariatric eating.com has amazing vitamins and they have no smell or after taste! They also have a support group on Facebook that is completely moderated, so you don’t get bad advice like taking chewable Flintstone vitamins which do not have enough of what we need as Bariatric patients

Thank you I'm gonna try the trader Joe's kind!!

Can I just reiterate one thing? Read the label. I was really surprised when I saw how close the RDAs were in children's vitamins and adult vitamins. But I'm suspicious of companies that sell any kind of pill that's supposed to do something magical for you, whether it's vitamins or generic viagra. I know the FDA has strict requirements for labeling and each label has to go through a vetting process before it can be applied to a bottle. You can phone them up and get someone to confirm the information, as well. Making sure we supplement is essential, since we cut out so much vitamin/mineral-rich food in order to live the bariatric life.

My doctors told me flinstones chewable with iron were just fine. After some time we re-check blood and supplement as needed. Thank you for your input Dianne!
