Weight loss

Step away from the scale for a while. The first 4-6 weeks can be all over the place for some people. Above all else know this: if you are following your plan, making good eating choices and staying hydrated, your body IS burning fat, no matter what the scale says during this time. You are in an extreme calorie deficit after surgery, and your body will burn fat and muscle to get energy.

We are full of fluid after the hospital. How fast that fluid is expelled depends on a variety of things. Some people get rid of that extra water quickly, especially if they are in ketosis and drinking all the water they are supposed to. Others may be on the dehydrated side of things for a while after surgery and your body my try to retain water, especially if you aren't drinking quite enough.

Then there is a dreaded "3-week Stall" which isn't a real stall. Your body is still burning fat, but again water balance comes into play during this time and can counterbalance your scale weight.

Everybody experiences slightly different things, but it takes a good 4-8 weeks for things to sort of normalize and get more consistent for most people. Although, it is important to know that there really isn't a "normal" in this process. Some people lose very slowly and some very quickly. Most of us are somewhere in between and my go through fast periods or slow periods of fat loss surrounded by periods that seem like stalls.

Instead of focusing on your scale, try to focus on building new habits and a new lifelong relationship with food. It's easier said than done since our whole purpose is to lose fat/weight and we want to see that all gone as quickly as possible. We are going to weigh ourselves. It's not realistic to not weigh, but be can take the emphasis off of it. The weight loss will happen, but your best chance at long term success is focusing on food/hydration/resistance exercise and not how fast it comes off. You'll get there.
