1 week post op

Hey guys, I’m a newbie here. I’m currently one week post op. The pain has gotten a lot better however I haven’t really been able to stomach protein shakes. Also I’ve been really sad these last couple of days. If anyone could offer any advice it would be helpful. I’m still on the clear liquid diet. I have been able to get my water intake in but it cramps Everytime I sip. I’m just so exhausted but I’ve been trying to give myself grace.

Post-op depression is very common and will go away by itself in time. I am with you on the protein shakes. Can't stand them. However, I did find one solution: Trader Joe's protein powder. It comes in a tall can like a Quaker Oats box. I think there's a scoop inside. I made Magic Milk, which is regular milk with a packet of Milkman powder blended in. The recipe is in this group; just do a search. I think it's 20 or 30 grams of protein and it tastes okay. As I ramped up to soft foods, I would add a banana or other soft fruit to the blender with the milk in it. I also used it to make hot cereal. No water. Just heat up the milk and stir in cream of wheat or malt-o-meal so it's cooked, but thin. Again, this is a good protein hit. I would use creamed soup cooked in MM also.

As to your water cramping, you might try drinking warm water and using a spoon to take it in, as if you were eating soup. This worked for me. Cold water was not good. I could feel it like an ice cube in my stomach.

You can search through my posts here for my post-op diet for other suggestions. Congratulations. Take it really easy, if you can, lying down watching tv or something. Healing takes time so don't try to rush it. Take the pain meds as often as you need them. Don't be a hero. You just had major surgery and your plumbing has been re-routed, so you shouldn't expect to be getting up and going to the gym or even for a walk. IMO the more you stay horizontal, the faster your new digestive system will heal. Best of luck.
