56 Calorie "Skinny Chunky Monkey Cookies"

Nutter Butter cookies are 65 calories each and Oreos are 70 calories each.

I mention this because manufacturers take advantage of us with equivocating calories and health. If non-obese people have daily calorie allotments of 1200, and we start sorting things out in protein grams having one or two cookies can screw things up.

But we need some relief in the form of treats and cookies are an ideal snack. There are some big chewy cookies that are sold as health food. My advice is always read the label. You can't maintain your weight without an intimate knowledge of calories vs nutrition.

I'm not an expert on this because, even though I have eaten applesauce based cookies I've never made them. But there are cookies you can make that are delicious where you use no fat and even no sugar. Some cookies even substitute other ground grains for flour. And often times those alternate grains are rich in protein.

You can take away from food that you would ordinarily eat for meals and turn them into cookies. But it's just super important that the basis of the cookie is not butter or wheat flour. in these chunky monkey cookies, there is 500 calories in the cocoa powder and peanut butter alone.

Eat drink and be merry, but don't forget to know what you're eating. And I have discovered that a tiny bite of something tastes just as good as a huge shovel-full shoved in your mouth. In fact, it taste better.

Caveat emptor!

I've been starting to play around with substitutes. Nutter Butter and Oreo's, well I could never stop at just one!!! That's why I totally cut that stuff out and I am fine with that. But during this baking season when I'm making cookies for my daughter's family, neighbors, etc it is nice to find a healthier cookie. I agree with your tiny bite and savoring it. I've even gotten to the point where just smelling food and enjoying the smell without eating it is fine too! :)

I came across this recipe which looked pretty healthy as far as cookies go and only 56 calories...

Skinny Chunky Monkey Cookies

I haven't tried them yet but they are on my list to try.
You can increase the protein by adding some collagen protein to them (unflavored, of course). I play with subs in all my baking, even if I am not the one eating it - making them better for my family. There have been some royal failures, but for the most part, I am able to make almost anything without anyone being able to tell they are healthy.

Yep, I was thinking protein would probably be a good addition to this one too. :)

Those must be pretty small cookies if that recipe serves 30! Perhaps the author's idea of a "heaping spoonful" is much different than mine...which might have contributed to my extra calories in the past! lol.
I bet they would be quite tasty though. :)

This photo is in my albums on my profile. These were perfect for me, banana-based, no sweetener at all, and they were tasty, but not so much that I wanted to eat more than one. They're protein bars but I can't find the recipe. You almost don't need one, though. Mash a few overripe bananas, add some grains like oats and wheat germ, some dried fruits and nuts, a pinch of salt and baking powder, and drop by tablespoons onto a baking sheet. 375, 10 to 12 minutes, let cool on the cookie sheet to solidify, et voila!

You can alter the nutritional value by the dried fruits and nuts you choose. I prefer Craisins to raisins, and cashews to walnuts. Thank God for Trader Joe's awesome selection of affordable nuts. Cookies are probably the easiest treat to bake, and you can literally just mix a cup of granola with applesauce or pureed fruit to make the base. Add collagen as El noted, and even protein powder. Go nuts! No skill required, just a fork to mash everything together.

Use small quantities to make a dozen or so. You can always make another batch.

And side by side, homemade cookies make nutter butters taste like dog food!
