A Man Beginning To Avoid Jarod Nandin's fate.

Hello, everybody. I am Tosicamir (he/him), gamer, game developer, and 440 pounds. My wife and I have been preparing for laparoscopic surgery since November 4th, 2019. The pandemic really messed with the timings of appointments for me to get all of the medical clearances necessary, but finally, everything is in order, and I go into the office on January 7th to sign my consent form and acquire a surgery date (my wife decided to start her surgical path after mine, at the surgeon's suggestion.)

My battle with my weight has a few more hurdles than just a sedentary lifestyle; I also have a severe, asphyxiating allergy to chlorophyll (chemical in most plants, responsible for their green coloring,) which may not seem so bad on the surface, until you realize... no onions, no garlic, no spices. Also no plant based fillers in medicines, which rules out a ton of OTC and Rx medicines, even simple things like common multivitamins and iron supplements have to be rigorously checked for allergens. This allergy is partially to blame for my weight gain based on dietary restrictions alone, and needs to be overcome daily.

I am lucky enough to be in the care of Dr. George Ferzli, one of the highest esteemed surgeons in the field, for the duration of my journey. His staff provides a great support group, but meetings are all virtual now, resulting in a bit of inefficiency as well as less of them to attend. This will be my first online support group that I have made myself a part of as a direct result of the need to be in a space with like minded people. Thank you all for taking the time to read, and I hope to speak with you all more soon!

Welcome to our group Tosicamir! I'm so glad you joined us because a support group is so important in your journey with WLS. And with it being an online group, you can reach out anytime of day which is so much more helpful than an in-person group (although they have their value as well).

So sorry about your severe allergies, that must make it tough. Sounds like this surgery is a great choice for you and I wish you the best of luck with your appointment tomorrow. Please let us know how it goes.

Welcome to the group! Uhm, I’m sure you know this but have adapted well, but it sounds like your allergies suck. Sorry, not trying to be unsympathetic but wow! I’ve heard of people allergic to different meats and I thought that was unfortunate. I’m sure you’ve overcome a lot of obstacles to get here, which means you are determined. Good luck moving forward, and we’re always here if you need anything!

Welcome to the group. You've certainly had quite a battle to fight with such a rare allergy that has such a broad influence. I can't imagine it. The good news, I think, is that the odds are in your favor for a safe and successful surgery and after that, as you know, will be working around the allergy to meet your goals. It sounds like you have a great support system in place, so I'd put money on the fact that you'll be very successful.

Best of luck!

Hello and welcome to the group. Congratulations on your decision to have the WLS. I love that you and your wife decided to do it together, even if a few months apart. I think that will make it much easier for you both long term, as you'll have the same eating needs/restrictions. I hope that you have been given a good nutritionist that will help you determine what foods/vitamins you can have after surgery.

Wow! I am so glad to see your post! It makes me see things in perspective. To see that you have been working at this for over a year tells me I better get myself set up for a while and just be determined to make this happen. Good Luck sir!
