Brand New to the Group

Hi. I'm new here. Just started my pre op this month. Hoping for surgery by January. i got my psycological clearance today. My surgeon wants me to lose 40-50 before surgery through medifast. The problem is that I cant afford the $300 / month. So my question to all of you is what type of shakes are close to medifast but not so expensive?
Thanks!

WELCOME!!! They have Whey protein powder at walmart... $20 for like a huge gallon size jug with many many servings in it. Thats what I used.. it was called HEALTHY ACCENTS. You would have to compare the ingredients to the medifast. They also have many other brands of protein supplements and you probably cant beat the prices. Also you could go to a health food store to talk to a knowledgeable person. Medifast and Optifast were too expensive for my blood too.

I used it as a meal replacement once a day between the 2-3 week til the 7th week. A friend of mine who just had just got out of the military recommended the Whey protein at Walmart. He said he used it as a meal replacement 3 times a day weeks at a time to keep his weight trim and the protein kept him strong and feeling good. He wanted me to use that as a diet instead of having the bypass. I felt I needed the bypass but used the whey protein as my doctor recommended. Ive lost 55 pounds so far in 4 months but the majority of it was lost in the beginning when I was on the whey protein and the weight loss has slowed down recently but the doctor said thats normal.
When I was looking for my surgeon and trying to find one who I was happy with, one of the doctors I went to see wanted me to buy and take Optifast from him, he sold it, and I just couldnt afford it. He also wanted me to pay out of pocket for their own nutritionist and exercise specialist as a separate charge from his charges and they didnt take insurance at all. It added up to thousands of dollars extra and I kept looking for a surgeon. I found a wonderful surgeon eventually but I had to drive an hour and a half each way to his office but it was well worth it.
Anyway, you could get on the internet and do some research on ingredients to compare. Hope this helps.

I don't know your circumstances, but if you switch to a Medifast diet, I assume you won't have to buy regular groceries, or not so many. Perhaps you can afford it. BTW welcome to the group.

Hi there Cheyenne, I have a surgeon I like. However they did send me to this nutation place that pushed medifast similar to what you experienced . These people are supposed to be helping us, not bleeding us dry!
I think I am going to try the meal replacement with whey protein and see how I do.

welcome
I hope you get the answers you need.
I did two protein shakes and a small dinner with lots of walking and lost from 330 to 275 before surgerys
started the end of February and surgery in June
My surgeon only said to lose it he didn't care which method I used. However, you need to follow your Dr advice as it has to do with patient safety and how they do the surgery
