Constipation, anyone else?

I know, no one wants to talk about bowel movements....ever, but I am curious if anyone else on preop diet is constipated?
I do take pain pills daily, but have never had constipation from them.
I have gone from drinking ZERO water and 9 diet cokes a day to ZERO diet coke and over 2 liters of water a day. I have had 3 BMs in last 9 days and they have been worst of my life. I just don't get it. Any insight appreciated.

Your body is making so some serious changes so give it time to adjust.
I had daily BM's then pre-op they stopped! Part of my pre-op directions were Miralax 3x daily four days prior to surgery and glad it was and it was very different.
Post op it had been every couple days with Benefiber - which is not helping. It's been almost a week. I switched to Miralax yesterday. I also started soft foods yesterday. So I am hoping the soft mushy veggies will help.
I think it's a process to find what is going to work.
Stay hydrated.
Keep moving.
Talk to your doc and RD.

I'm so glad you brought this up. If I could only offer one piece of advice, it would be to include regular use of a fiber laxative before and after surgery. A difficult bowel movement can cause physical damage. My first bm took 24 hours and two-dozen visits to the toilet, pain, hemorrhoids, bleeding, agony. It all could have been avoided if I'd started adding fiber before surgery. I don't want to go into detail now, but I did post here in the last year or two. You can search for it if you want to be horrified.

It's a small thing, but don't live to regret not doing it. Take the laxative. Avoid the trauma.

I have had IBS-C for years. Which basically means my constipation is chronic, pretty much for life and I have incurable motility issues. Therefore, I consider myself a semi-expert on the things doctors suggest to help. I have tried them ALL. That being said, I would suggest you try
Metamucil 4 in 1 (sugar free) 1 rounded teaspoon first thing in the morning mixed into 8oz of water. If that does not work, you can slowly increase it to 2 rounded teaspoons a day. You can, of course, use another brand of fiber but this is my preference. I find it to be faster acting and more potent than Benefiber.

Call your surgeon. Mine recommended colace, miralax, benefiber. I was constipated before & after, now 2 weeks after I have diarrhea. Grrrrr
