Count down to my Liquid diet then onto my surgery on St Patrick's Day-

OK so my 1st post- I am about to get Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery on St Patrick's day- sure I will be greener than green! I have been having extreme GERD issues for the last 25-30 years and over those years have gained so much weight with so many diets yoyo effect from 125 lbs (Adult 20's-30) up to 230 at my highest. I started this journey 2 months ago and went from 230 down to 207 as of today (I have been doing 2 protein shakes a day and 1 meal since January after the new years but didn't diet too much prior).
I start my 100% liquid diet in the 3rd- which scares me because I tend to get weak at certain point in the day since not having much food in my system. (I do eat a full meal/smaller portion- but that helped ALOT!
So today I joined this group and I am nervous about giving up the acid reflux pains to stomach pains. I have read how awful the pain is for years after and I want to know what your experience was if you do not mind sharing. Also when you are on the clear liquid diet does that mean no Premier Proteins drinks and you must only have the clear liquid drinks? I need to buy in bulk what I will be needing sooner than later...anyways..thanks for letting me join this group! Any advice- would be appreciated!

Hi Danielle, welcome to our group! Yes, during clear liquid phase you can not have regular protein shakes but you can have Premier Protein Clear (or other brands that are clear). I'm not quite sure what you mean about stomach pain for years after and giving up acid reflux pains for stomach pains. Hopefully it is something we can clarify for you.

Good luck on your journey - and since you are having surgery on St. Patrick's Day, how could it be anything else? :)

Thank you Judy for your response... I keep reading about terrible stomach pains- and I am afraid that I will be no longer having the ACID Reflux but instead will be in terrible pain for years to come. Is this not true and people do have regular pain free stomachs after this surgery- I want to be normal again!!

No Danielle, I do not think stomach pains are normal at all! You might have read or talked to some that had some problems, or perhaps they ate things that weren't well suited for them post- surgery. The only time I have had any stomach pain is when I ate too fast and too much. Otherwise I feel great! I really don't think that is anything you should worry about.

Danielle, hello and welcome. I had the RNY in June of 2020. I also had GERD pre-op. I do not have it any longer. I certainly do not have regular stomach pain. Judy is absolutely right. If you eat too fast or too much, your stomach will hurt, but that is controlled by you. I feel better than I have felt in decades.
As for the clear liquid diet, they make clear protein drinks but check those labels. Protein 2o has 15gr per 20 oz bottle. After surgery, you are not going to be able to drink 80 oz to get 60 grams of protein. I picked up a few bottles of Isopure Zero Carb. It has 40 protein in each 20oz bottle. Its also what the hospital gave me, so that's my go to. Do the math on what you'll need before you buy in bulk. I had protein coming out of my ears!!

Thank you Judy!! I talked to a cousin who said her stomach never hurt- but if she ate too much or too fast she would vomit- so your right about controlling it!! Thank you!!

Thank you for your response- looked up the brand you were talking about- my nutritionist told me NOT to buy more than one until I make sure I like the flavor- or I will be buying something I may not like the taste of. What is your favorite flavor? I bought the apple melon one....waiting for it to arrive to taste.

The only option available, when I sent my husband to GNC the day after I got home from the hospital, was lemonade. I really wasn't in love with it, but I mixed it with half water and added a few basil leaves, which was surprisingly good. At that time, getting my protein was way more important than being in love with the flavor. I had just spent 2 weeks drinking too sweet protein shakes and really, really bland protein soup so at that point, I did not care lol

Hi I just had RNY surgery on the 15 of feb. I had real confusion after surgery because the booklet they gave me said clear liquids 1st week after surgery. But my discharge papers said full liquid on my 1st full day home. So I got ahold of the team and they reassured me that full liquids were the menu. S/F Pudding with protein powder, S/F jello, clear protein water and protein shakes home made of course. At my first week follow up I was told March 2 I could go to applesauce consistency. I overdid my first scrambled eggs but you can read about that in the struggles post. Overall I am doing good. The meds the doc gave me after surgery for gerd has really wiped out all the heartburn. My sinus/respiratory meds are off but that will work out in the long run. Be conscious of your choices and portions and you will be a success.

Thank you for your experience! My notes state clear liquids for the 1st week too! Sounds like you are doing really good.. tell me what is your favorite home made protein shake is with ingredients I was told I would no longer need GERD meds after this surgery..can you tell me which meds they prescribed? That is the main reason why I am doing this surgery...granted I am obese obviously so this will help lots of things I hope!

I had my surgery 14 years ago. I was on clear liquids and protein drinks for at least afew weeks. I was allowed to add in small quantities of pureed food as tolerated. It was intuitive, like my stomach and brain were married. That was great because it allowed me to add in appropriate quantities of regular foods in a way they were easily tolerated. Then i was suddenly half my weight and my appetite was grateful to my brain.

You look AMAZING!!! Thank you so much!! I am so ready to get back to a normal size that doesn’t include any L or XL on the tags and if only I can get into single digits pants!!! You are so inspirational to me!!!!

I got my shake recipes from a program called “Body by Vi” it was 2012 when I was introduced to it by a coworker( she sold the protein mix). One of the suggestions in my paperwork for milk snacks was carnation instant breakfast essentials ( there are two kinds, one has extra protein added) mixed with one cup milk. So I took the milk and mix added ice and a powdered fiber laxative I also add pb powder for extra flavor. Right now I am varying between a soy protein (nature made from Walmart) ~and whey ( gluten- carnation) protein and a milk protein (muscle milk). Not impressed with the muscle milk uses 2/3 cup at a times. Yes I measured the scoop. Way too much for a shake.

the acid reducer is called. Pantoprazole sodium. Because I take 2 allergy meds that cause acid reflux.

Thank you for your reply and sharing your recipes. I thought they remove the portion of the stomach that makes the acid with the bypass surgery? I am on that same medication for the last few months. I was on Prilosec since it came out on the market 20 plus years ago...until it recently stopped working!

I thought grehlin was only made in the stomach too, but it is also manufactured in the brain. There isnt a specific area of the stomach that can be removed to purge it. More importantly, the stomach is an organ, like the liver, so you can't accurately target it.

It's not the same as bile. That's secreted by the liver into the stomach. I've had hepatitis and met bile up-close and personal. If you have a healthy liver, you should never see bile, but it is manufactured by WLS for some reason i cant explain.
