Finally scheduled!

After prepping with this program since early August, I finally have my SURGERY DATE! I’m having gastric bypass surgery on Friday, July 9th at Sunnyside Kaiser in Clackamas, Oregon.
I am…well, a little shook. Having a date, especially after all the fits and starts caused by the pandemic, feels almost unexpected.

Congrats! You are in my neck of the woods. I had my surgery at Legacy Good Samaritan in Portland (I live in Clackamas Co though). I hope everything goes smoothly for you. It will be here in no time and you'll start the best part of the journey on the other side.

I'm right behind you on Monday July 12. Same surgery. I share some of that "shook" feeling. I know the next months will just fly by.

I got so excited when I ready your post! We are surgery twins!

I will be having surgery on July 9th as well, at Kaiser Sunnyside! Congratulations on moving towards the next step.

OMG! We are! Congratulations to you too! Who is your surgeon? I’m with Dr Leger. How has the waiting been for you? It’s been such a weird sort of “anticipation on hold” since my pre-op in January. When they called to actually schedule the surgery it didn’t sink in for two days.
I had been in the program a few years back but dropped out because I convinced myself I could continue to do just fine without the surgery. I had lost about 35 lb, got overconfident, and quit the program. I gained much of that weight back after I backed out of surgery. I’ve lost 42 lb since rejoining last August. I was pretty high up there to begin with so I had a goal weight I had to get below or Dr Leger would cancel the surgery. I hit the goal a couple months back and have been doing my best to get as far lower from that goal as I can! This time around I have a much better mindset. I’ve cultivated a much better, and more sustainable, attitude. The covid delays were the best thing that could have happened to me. I managed to hit a goal and then not “relax my guard” and bounce back up. I feel more solid in my skills, especially after the challenge of shutdown isolation and stress really put them too the test!
Best of luck! Just 54 more days! (I have a countdown calendar. )

Reading your post made me smile for several reasons!!

First off, congrats on being and staying 42 lbs down! That is NOT easy. Second, I relate to your journey so much!

This is also my second time through this process. I convinced myself last time that I would be able to do low-carb/keto and drop the pounds that I needed. After having some success and losing 30 pounds over a few months I dropped out, only to gain it all back plus a few more unhealthy habits.

We also have the same Dr!! I met with Dr. Leger in Jan (25th) and left there feeling so defeated. I was still gaining and felt hopeless. I was struggling makeing the changes I needed while teleworking and on an emotional rollercoaster this last year (pandemic, social isolation, and the passing of my father). He basically told me if I couldn’t lose weight he wouldn't do surgery. Since then I have lost 25 lbs and hope to be down 40 by surgery!

While my preop appointment was tough, it has really made me take a look at my emotions around eating.

Seriously so proud of you and KEEP IT UP!!!!!!

My condolences about the loss of your father. That is rough during an already intensely difficult time.
No wonder you were struggling with dropping weight! It is super impressive you were able to start working on emotions around eating. That is something I am in constant struggle with as well. My biggest issue is mindless, bored eating. I have actually made a rule that I don’t enter the main part of the kitchen until I’m preparing planned food. Even cleaning only happens at prep times!
As for Dr Leger, I’m pretty sure his pre-op tactics are always harsh. I sat through a 40 minute lecture by him about food addiction. (I had already started dealing with my eating issues from an addiction lens but he didn’t ask.) At my pre-op I had lost 23 lb since rejoining the program and was down 46 lb from my heaviest ever weight. I got zero feedback about that. He told me if I didn’t get below a specific BMI by surgery he’d cancel. I hit his line in late March. While I believe his goal for me was in my best interest and for maximum safety, I actually had to spend a couple therapy sessions undoing the shame his lecture inspired in me. I don’t believe that shame is a healthy way to address food/weight issues (or any issues really). I think his drill sergeant shtick is ultimately detrimental to patients but the encouragement from the rest of the bariatric team counters it well. I have a rule about surgeons. They can have the worst bedside manner all they want as long as their record is good, and Dr Leger’s is superb. You only see the surgeon about 3-4 times in the whole process and one of those times you’re unconscious!
I’m glad his talk inspired you to push forward and address a really difficult thing. It worked for you and that is fantastic. You go!!!
Whew! I want off on a tangent! I hope you don’t mind.
