Frustration about surgery

Hello. I finally got the call I have been waiting for...just a small let down and I am so bummed out. Even though my insurance approved the surgery and the office finally got the letter, I can't even see the surgeon until May 24. She said to expect to be there most of the morning. Surgeries are generally a month out after that so now we are looking at late June I suppose. I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up to have the surgery at the tentative date.

My daughter suggested that I slowly start transitioning to liquids so when the time comes to go to all liquids pre-op, my body will be more adjusted to the change. I'm still frustrated though, because they should've explained this better at the office. They made it sound like I could have it this month, then to find out it's still another 6 weeks out is a total bummer!!:eek::eek:

I need some encouraging thoughts here....Don't worry I am not backing out of surgery as I have gone through too much to back out, I just want to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Nana-I had to postpone my surgery for about a month later than I could have had it due to one of my niece's needing knee replacement surgery. I thought the time would drag but it didn't. Before I realized it the day was here. You could spend some of the the time getting yourself organized. Maybe go shopping now and stock up on the foods and beverages you are going to need for the first month after surgery. Get all of your required supplements, have all your RX meds refilled the week before surgery, catch up on laundry, pack your hospital bag, get some magazines to read in the hospital, re-arrange your bedroom to make things easier for you. There are dozens of things you could do to make your life easier for that first month home after surgery. I spent a lot of time running around for pre-op testing since almost everything was in a different location. Also take time out for some fun activities. Maybe treat yourself to a day at the spa or get your friends together for a girl's night out. Do the same with your family. Knock some things off your "bucket list". Make a bucket list if you don't have one. If you have any hobbies try indulging yourself in those more than you usually would. After all, this is your time for victory and you need to celebrate it by doing things you love to do.

Also, let your surgeon know if he has a cancellation that you would be willing to change your date. You would be surprized how many people cancel or change the date of their surgeries at the last minute.

Thank you Pat! I appreciate your input, I think that is just what I needed. Everyone says things happen for a reason, and we will know later on what that reason is that will be my need to wait. I had started by things today, like my sugar free kool-aid, some crystal light, some v-juice, DanActive probiotic drinks, etc. I can't get my supplements until I see the surgeon because I still need that letter of medical necessity for my FSA to cover my protein and supplements. I am also going fishing with my hubby tomorrow, and going to spend time with my oldest son and his girlfriend tomorrow afternoon. Going to try and do more cardio at the gym. My daughter suggested that I start increasing my fluid intake now, and eat less food, that way when it comes time for it, my body will start getting used to having the liquids all the time. What do you think about that?

Your plans sound great Nana. How long did the surgeon say you need to be on your pre-op liquid diet? Just be careful about going overboard on the liquids before you are required to do so. You need to have enough protein and other healthy food in order to maintain your strength and energy. Maybe talk to the nutritionist so that you can start your supplements before surgery if you decide to go on the liquid diet before you are required to do so. You don't want to become deficient and the nutritionist can advise you what to do to avoid this.

Let me know how the fishing trip goes. I LOVE to fish!!!

Hi Pat. I did plan to include my protein in my daily intake, I figured three 8oz glasses of protein daily, plus my other liquids. I'm not sure about going totally liquid yet, we were told 1 week prior to go all liquids and I am also already taking my supplements as suggested by the surgeon and the nutritionist. Right now I am not usually up, but I woke up about 1/2 hour ago and just can't sleep...last night I felt so sick after dinner, like my meal was sitting in my chest. I tried to throw up and nothing would come up. I think maybe I ate too fast or too big of bites, though I tried to cut all my meat into tiny pieces.

this happened to me also. started my journey in nov. then it was always one more thing and another wait. being politically correct isnt my strength...so i ticked the wrong person and believe i delayed the process alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! remember you have a legal right to your records and can get them as you see various medical referrals i.e. lab results, physchological eval. and everything else. anyone out their remember this. elaine

oh hope i dont sound negative love everyone elses input. just be in charge of your care. guess i will always be anurse. elaine

Hi Elaine, no you don't sound negative. You are right that we have a right to our medical records. it's weird that when I got the approval letter, it doesn't specify WLS, it says unspecified laproscopic stomach surgery.

Hi Elaine, I don't think you sound negative either, we all have a right to our medical record, my lab slips even specify if I want a copy they can send me one, but between my PCP and mty bariatric doctor they both share evrything with me and let me know if something is amiss. . I hope they don't delay your surgery just because you want to be informed. Stay strong. Tom
