GERD and Hiatal Hernia

I am new here..... I have had severe GERD for 20+ years and now have a hiatal hernia as well as cellular damage in my esophagus because of the constant acid. My Dr suggested the Roux en Y to cure the GERD and hernia. I was very much against this idea at the beginning, but after reading many, many stories of others that have had it done for weight loss, I am actually looking forward to it now and have started the process. I had my first appointment two weeks ago with the dietician and I am hoping to have surgery by June-ish. I weigh 265lbs and although I am looking forward to the possibility of the GERD finally being gone, I am also looking forward to the weight loss and being active again. I know the sleeve will make my GERD worse and it is not an option for me. But, I was wondering if anyone else here had the gastric bypass for GERD / hiatal hernia reasons and if it cured the issue? Have you had good results with it in regards to GERD? My stomach is so miserable every single day and I am looking for a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.

I

I just had hiatal hernia and bypass 7 days ago. You will have to stay on gred med for 3 months after surgery. I haven't had gerd since surgery. But since I both done laparoscopic my Dr. said my recovery will take more time.
Good luck

Welcome to the site. I have had GERD for years and have Barretts Esophagus, which is the pre-cancerous cellular change I believe you are probably talking about. I had the bypass in June myself. I have had one episode of reflux since the surgery but it was not NEARLY as bad as it had been previously. More like light heartburn. But my gastroenterologist has said that I will need to stay on antacids because the functional damage is still there. So, it might depend on how much damage GERD had done to your esophagus. But I would still wholeheartedly recommend it. I feel fantastic and like I said, one episode of light heartburn is a jillion times better than the almost nightly problems waking up with reflux I was having previously.

I also have Barrett's esophagus and severe GERD. I had a gastric bypass and what a difference. I think surgery was well worth just fixing the GERD I still take a PPI and sometimes f famotidine I'm very happy
