How do you deal with the stress/anxiousness?

So today, I met with a doctor [ortho surgeon] who will soon repair a torn rotator cuff. She kind of flipped out when I told her that I was having the weight-loss surgery in 60 days. She told me that I needed to get a second opinion. [She called my primary doctor to ask him to explain]. She told me that there were many "bad surgeries" that had resulted in ruined lives [permanent gas, eating any food became miserable, constant trips to the loo et al]. Spooked me.

I have been intellectually bought into this surgery for the last 90 days. The research data is very strong - we will live better lives. But there are nay-sayers out there as well. I am anxious, but I will go through with the surgery to hopefully rid myself of diabetes, hyper tension and high cholesterol.

In the meantime, how are you [or how did you] deal with the stress/anxiousness? Many thanks in advance for sharing.

Hi C_Ster, Wecome. Well your orthapidist is correct that all those things can happen, as a matter of fact I have had gas since I was born but don't we all:eek:, but seriously, there have been complications with people and they still do happen but anymore that is becoming the exception, you said you have done your research so you know that WLS has come a long way in the last 10 and even 5 years. I had hypertension and high cholesterol and both are gone, I should warn you though I developed a very strong obsession for alcohol, as apposed to my mild obsession pre surgery, and it nearly did me in so if you drink be very carefull with alcohol, that was the only set back I had, I am ten lbs from my goal and when I get there I may set it lower or I may just try and stay, I don't know yet:rolleyes:

As far as the stress it will be an emotional rollercoaster so hang on for the ride, find a local support group and come on here to vent or ask more questions. One thing that helped me was to sit down and remeber trying every other diet and exercise program under the sun and if they worked it would only be for a short time and then I would gain all the weight back and then some. Hang in there. Tom

c_ster, Welcome to the forum. I have to agree with Tom. Plus, not all doctors are not advocates of WLS. Try not to get discouraged by one persons opinion. There are so many studies that show the benefits of WLS and the scale tips in favor of it. It's normal to be anxious, nervous and to feel apprehension as you move closer to your surgery date. Make sure to return to the forum to let us know how you are doing.
