Hi I'm Bindyt
My husband had a gastric bypass last February he's done great down 125..Problem is he's starting to eat lots of sweets milk ice cream n sometimes food. Says he is losing weight. He even drinks while eating. I thought he wasn't suppose to do this. Does he know what he is doing has anyone else done this.

Hi Bindyt
No I don't think he is supposed to eat sweets and ice cream. However there is whats called a dumping syndrome which is caused by the body not being able to process or absorb sugar and it goes staight through and causes loose stools and sometimes severe diarrhea in people who have had the gastric bypass because some of the intestines are tied off. So in the beginning the body doesn't gain any weight from the sweets BUT I was told that the body eventually figures this out and later will absorb the calories. Another problem is when eating alot of sweets your husband probably isn't following a healthy food diet and because the intestines are re-routed, that protein, calcium, and vitamins must be eaten in proper amounts or his health will suffer greatly. Good luck convincing him he is eating wrong. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

Not everyone gets the dumping syndrome. But what he is eating is not a good thing. Does he have a surgery visit scheduled? Maybe you can convenience him to make an appointment?

There are some people that see this for what it is...a tool and follow the diet and plan to a "T" but then there are some people that see it as a free pass to eat whatever they want and find ways to get around the surgery. Both of my parents have an early version of the band one is just a basic rubber band and one is metal. My dad can't eat bread where my mom has no restrictions. Both have HORRIBLE eating habits. My dad eats nothing but junk and can sit down with a quarter gallon of ice cream with no problems and he will eat at the computer because it makes him eat slower problem being is that he can put back a HUGE baked potato with chili, cheese, butter and sour cream...the. entire. thing. My mom will sit down with a regular size dinner plate full of food and will eat and purge until she eats the entire plate. I grew up with the clean plates are happy plates and happy plates get dessert. Now as an adult I consciously have to tell myself that I am full and leave something on my plate.

I'm sorry your husband is deciding to not follow the program. They say only 40% of people with WLS keep the weight off for 5 years or more. And it ain't by eating ice cream.

I had RNY in February 2013 too. The temptation is there, and I taste but, and most times no eating the things that are not the list. I am not at goal weight yet, and I know I really could do anything I want, but why.... Eating food X = what will you gain? Will it be something you truly need or will it just be weight and past poor health conditions returning. That where those training classes really help to work through the mind stuff that causes to gain unwanted weight.

I am new to this forum. I am new to gastric bypass. My surgery was 11/4/2013. I am following the rules and guidelines.

My surgeon and his affiliated support personnel have clearly stated that this is a tool that can help you lose weight. However, you must follow the guidelines. Clearly, two weeks into the program I have "religion" and I am being very diligent. However, prior to my surgery I did attend support groups and I will continue to go to my local support group. It was very clear that you can defeat the surgery by not abiding and the new way you must live to lose weight and keep it off. There were a few people there who had done just that. It is so sad.

I see the weight coming off. I see my diabetes being normalized already. I am feeling better already. I am hoping to have added a few more years on to my lifespan. I will be 70 this January and I would like to have a fighting chance of enjoying life for another 10 years or more. That is why I had this procedure performed (gastric bypass).

Yes, try to get your husband to go back to support groups. Try to get him to come to his senses.

Best wishes,

Ralph
