Need Help: Adding Protein Powder to Soups

Hi all - I am 5 days post op and navigating the world of protein goals. I read somewhere that you could add a scoop of unflavored protein powder into strained soups to help reach daily protein goals. HOWEVER, I just tried it and the soup was extremely gummy/weirdly chunky. Am I doing something wrong or is this the norm? Would love to hear some experiences from the group. THANK YOU <3

I actually would advise you to talk to your nutritionist about this and try not to use protein powder as a way to bridge the gap. I didn't use protein powder or drinks 13 years ago like people do today. I just got through the liquid phase as quickly as possible and once I was able to eat soft foods, I hit my protein goals every day because I love milk products including yogurt and cottage cheese. And when I was able to eat turkey, which has the highest protein content per ounce of any other meat, I could mix it up in a blender with cranberry sauce and instant potato flakes and a little magic milk for a lovely, high protein meal. I lost 60 pounds in my first two months and 115 pounds total over 14 months. And I ate well while I was doing it because I really love to cook.

I know this is an old post but I wanted to contribute something here. If you're going to add unflavored gelatin or protein to your soup, and you're using canned condensed soup, you should mix it into the canned soup first and then mix the soup and the liquid and and stir it well while it's cooking and you can eat it hot, not warm.

If you're going to add protein powder to anything, do it using the slurry method. Take a few tablespoons of the liquid and mix them with your protein powder until they are well blended. You could use a stand blender to make sure that they're mixed, or egg beaters or just a fork that you smash the stuff down with. Then add it back into your remaining dish in small dollops and make sure that they are well dissolved before you add another spoonful. Then like the first soup or whatever, you just stir the heck out of it so it won't stick.

Years ago, the performer Ann Margaret fell from several feet when her equipment failed during rehearsal. Being quite injured and with her jaw wired for several weeks, she requested blended pizza and spaghetti dinners to change from soup. I always wondered what that was like and should try it. And now I know!

It's best to add it in to COLD liquid until totally dissolved and then warm it up. If you are doing soup, you might mix the powder in a bowl with 3 tablespoons of cold water until it dissolves into something similar to pancake batter, then add the soup to the bowl little by little, stirring as you go.

It should be a lot less gummy and clumpy. It tends to blend in better with creamier soups, mainly because the texture is more similar, but it works with any soup.

You might also try different brands, but from what I've experienced, mixing with cold water first is the best way to go with any of them.
