Hi everyone! I just found out today that I have a hiatal hernia. It was in my EGD report, but the doctor who performed the procedure never informed me of it. I found out today when we were making sure that all the papers were in order for surgery. But the did assure me that it will get repaired during the surgery. Now on Wed I have an appointment with my PCP to get cardiac clearance so we can proceed. I'm sure it won't be a problem otherwise he would've told me prior to giving all my info to the surgeon right?? Just curious:confused:

I don't know a lot about hernias but I have heard they can be painful or go unnoticed, thankfully I have never had to find out either way. I sounds like something they can fix when they do the WLS. I guess thats another reason for all the tests, so there are no suprises for the surgons. Hang in there only a few more weeks left. Tom

Thanks Tom! I am feeling better since I talked to someone in my surgeon's office that has had WLS as well. She was so sweet and told me if I was needing more reassurance about the surgery or other questions to ease my mind she would be more than happy to schedule me a one on one with the surgeon to ease my mind. I told her that wasn't necessary right now, but if I started getting that way I would be sure to call and make an appointment. I bought some protein drinks today, EAS AdvantEdge, low carb. It was on the approved list and it was only $4.97 for a 4 pack and I can split them up to give me more during the day.

Hi Nana G,

I'm having surg 06/06/12 to repair my LARGE hiatal hernia & gastric bypass.
My hunch is that the hernia is the key to expediting the surgery from my ins??

When I initially met with my surg, it was for the hernia repair & he suggested the gastric bypass in addition.
I asked him how often he performed this surgery (hiatal hernia & roux n y); he replied about twice a week.

From what I understand, it can be fairly common in people of size; I believe mine was initially congential then excaberated by a 26 lb ovarian tumor and subsequent weight gain after this surgery performed in Dec 2001.

At least the abdominal CT show no recurrence, or nothing remarkable, so I'm thrilled to be 10 + yrs out w/o no recurrence of ovarian cancer.
Someone at a support group meeting told me she had "several" and has to have more surg to have then repaired & they don't always work.
Well, that's her opinion and every person's situation is different so I'm asking my surgeon when I see him.

At present I think the 2 big concerns are the hernia repair, not sure why & the mental thing about overeating in the first place.
The first will hopefully be resolved on 06/06/12 & the other is a lifetime issue regardless of surgery but I think having the surg as a tool will be the best.
I think more about food but in a different way; what will taste good together, planning, organizing, timing instead of just purchase & stuff.

Talk to your team, ask the questions; my PCP was the first to get the results from the abdominal CT and suggest I see a surgeon from other side effects I'd had for almost a year.

Best wishes, never stop searching for your answers until you get them resolved. My Ovarian cancer was first diagnosed as a bruised rib or pulled intercostal mucle - true.

I've had recurring ovarian cysts and am in need to get another colposcopy with the OB/GYN soon. I never knew I had the hernia until they were looking through my paperwork and showed me that I had one. My mom and grandma both had hernias, but my moms was rather larger. But nobody ever did anything with it
