New Here

Welcome, Ron. Do you have any questions or is Martha experiencing any problems? It would be great to start a conversation with you. I have one question; is there some obstacle keeping Martha from joining in? We're very friendly and there's lots of great information here, including many thousands of archived posts. If you do a search using the little Search feature in the upper right corner and entering a search term or key word, you will probably find a lot of information. However, I've been here since 2008 and the technology has really gone through a lot of advancements.

Is Martha on the liquid diet, or has she progressed to pureed or soft foods? Is she getting in her 8 glasses of water every day? And how are you feeling in your role as supporter? Does she have a nutritionist? Is she following a specific food plan given to her by her medical team? In general, how is everything going?

Hi, thank you so much for the reply! Yes, she just got out of surgery on the 8th so still little sore. I showed her this new great site so she will be on soon, I am here for her thru thick and thin, so I love to help her, right now she is on liquid diet, and we are trying to get her settled in with her protein, and multi vitamins. She is trying to do chicken broth but that is getting rough but were moving along. Water has been a little hard but hopefully when she gets all this down, she will do better with it. We don't have a nutritionist but yesterday we discussed it so we can get the things she needs. Right now, she will be on the liquid diet, but she was given a book on the food plan that is coming up. Thank you for welcoming us, this site, it sounds like a great place with a wealth of great information. Thank you, Ron.

Hi Ron, I've been using Better Than Bouillon for years because it has less salt and I can't tell the difference between it and the "real" stuff. And I think, personally, it would be great for your wife right now. I remember how empty and achy I felt not being able to eat solid food or a normal diet of any sort, so this stuff was nice, comforting, warm and flavorful.

Thank you, this will be a great thing to try, Right now her biggest problem i guess is the timing of the sipping, and all the other things she must get in during her day.She seems to run out of time on the clock getting it all done.Something we will need to work out,,Thank you.

Yes, the timing is key to success. I also measure my water out at night and put it in the fridge, because I love cold water but hate ice cubes. When the water is measured, even if it gets warm, you can dump it back into the pitcher and immediately pour out another glass without losing the chill.

For a while, I actually used a spoon and "ate" my water. Sounds weird, I know, but psychologically it did something to ease my anxiety about not being able to eat solid food with utensils.

Water consumption is a big topic of conversation here. Some people say any liquid counts toward water consumption, but I disagree. Water has a specific digestive function and the same amount of juice doesn't. Also, some people eat jello to make up for not drinking enough water, or drink bouillon and other liquids, but again, it's important to understand the chemical effect of actual water. You can look it up and also specifically look up why drinking water is important to weight loss.

I really like water and drink about 2 liters or more every day. But I also know how it feels to be limited to water when you want a soda or juice or something. My advice is, make it palatable and get busy first thing in the morning, for instance, by drinking a whole glass. I take meds and supplements four times a day, so I always make sure I get a lot of water in by doing that. In a sense, drinking enough water is more important than making sure you eat enough, IMO.

Hi, yes I think you are so right about water intake and how important it is during you day and during recovery. Today is day 7 after surgery it has been rough at times but were trying to get all in vitamins, protein, water and thank you for the idea, chicken better than billion, what a great change from the broth she was having,Thank you. I can see eating water, the mind has a funny way sometimes of adjusting and if it works that way of doing it then hey, what ever works.
