I have recently had surgery last month sept 2012, i am striggling a bit. Initially weight was dropping fast. But know very very slowly, can someone maybe tell me how much sugar and carbs i am supposed to haver per day. I got the water down and protein 3 meals and 2 snacks. But still a little lost. Anyone has any pointers

Hi dymondbe,

Welcome to the Forum.

When did you have your surgery and what type did you have? It is easier to find support when we know that information because the diets are slightly different. That way you can get the persons with the most experience to help you out. Generally speaking though I believe the requirement is between 60-80 Grams of protein and at least 64 ounces of fluids every day. Usually your protein shakes, popsicles, jello, coffee and tea count toward your liquid requirements. As far as sugar is concerned I believe you are to avoid it. The less dense meats and fish are a good source of protein. Chicken, tuna, grilled fish are all good. I don't tolerate beef too well and pork is so far a nono for me. I do tolerate thin sliced ham. Depending on your procedure others may be of more help here in the forum. I believe the chew chew chew and sip sip sip rules apply to everyone. Good luck.

Hi DiamondBe, Welcome. Like Java Joy said some more info would be helpful. One thing that stuck out was how much surgar? None would be the correct answer, no matter what surgery:rolleyes: Carbs are usually kept to less than 15 grams but if you are tolerating both of them I will take a guess and say maybe you had the lap band done:confused: Regardless, minimize the carbs and surgars, you should have been sent home with some instructions on a meal plan and the stages of when you can introduce foods into your daily meals, even with the Lap Band this is important although less restrictive than the RnY and Sleeve. Once we know your WLS proceedure we can give you some good tips.

Also keep in mind we all go through plateaus every so often because we have so much going on in our bodies and our metabalism is adjusting it takes the body some time to catch up, we also start losing fat and gaining muscle which gives the appearance of not losing weight but we actually lose inches. Tom

Hi DiamondBe,

Are you RNY? Sleeve? Switch? What type surg.? You might want to find a group that specializes so that you can get surg. specific advice too. Me? I had RNY 5 years ago. I initially lost 130 lbs over about a year.

Focus on protein first. Get about 90 grams in a day. I did this primarily through protein shakes and then added in food from there. Nothing white - no flour, no sugar, no milk. I mixed my protein with water - milk can't do anything for you because you can't absorb the calcium anymore and there's sugar in it. Also causes gas. Stay away from caffeine, anything carbinated, and limit carb. MAKE SURE TO TAKE VITAMINS (sorry to yell that but I'm currently getting iron infusions because I didn't follow my own advice).

Are you following the rules of eating? Nothing 1/2 hour before no food/liquid, eat but don't drink while you do it, and no liquid for an hour after. Sounds like a pain in the butt, and it is, but you won't "wash out" any of your food and it will keep you fuller longer. Also, stick to dense food that you have to chew....close to nature as you can get because processed food has a lot of hidden sugar. Just look at what your eating and try to eat quality stuff because you're eating less food. Watch for hidden fat and sugar. Also, if you have weird reactions to food there may be hidden fat, sugar, etc. The side effects of surg. like the bad reactions to sugar, etc., are more prevalent right after surg. Use those as your police/warning system.

I would also discuss your loss with your doc and nutritionist. You are your own best advocate. There are also great groups online to find more info. But if it's RNY, and you're not losing in the beginning, I'd really questions what's up and start with your doc.

Hope this helps,
Deb
