One week before surgery!

Hi all!! I just joined the site after lurking most of the weekend. I have my surgery set for 2/22 and I’m not going to lie I’m terrified. (getting a gastric bypass-RNY) I have a very supportive set of friends and my husband is amazing as well. I’m ready for the next stage of my life but it still is a major surgery that scares me.

I think much of the fear comes from people who had so many issues afterwards. Since everyone is different i don’t know what I will be facing. I already can’t take the gallstone meds they gave me before/after surgery since I got very ill on them so that’s a huge concern right off the bat.

I’m curious was anyone else super anxiety filled leading to your surgery? What helped?
I keep telling myself it will be fine, it’s a normal surgery for them to perform, I’m mostly healthy (minus the issues I need the surgery for), and reminding myself to bring up any weird pain or feelings to my doctors to be safe.

thanks everyone :)

Welcome! I was fairly nervous before surgery. It’s a huge and awesome life changing event. But I was also really excited. I was ready for the changes, and after being delayed due to insurance changes, I was done waiting. There’s always the possibility that something won’t happen the way it’s supposed to, but that’s normal with any surgery. It’s important to focus on what’s in our control and let the doctors do their thing. Sounds like you have a wonderful support system ready to help when you need it. Good luck!!

Welcome Reminyx to our group! Your surgery is almost here and it is very normal to be nervous. Try to focus on all the positives you see yourself having and do whatever you can to keep yourself relaxed these next few days. Maybe read a new book, play some relaxing music, maybe do some at home spa treatments like a facial or foot massage. I'm so glad you have a support husband and friends and now you have us too. You've got this! Wishing you all the best in your journey!

Hello and welcome. I'm sure you've looked at the risk/odds of complications and so you know that the majority of people do not have serious complications. Of course, knowing and feeling are 2 different things. It can feel like you are making a choice to have unnecessary surgery. Even knowing better, we still tend to treat obesity as a personal failure instead of a disease. Keep reminding yourself that you are doing this to improve you health and the quality and length of your life. And try to keep busy. I was extremely anxious before surgery, to the point I almost left the hospital when they came to prep me. I am SO grateful that I stayed. It can be hard, but it is SO worth it.

I don't know why i wasnt nervous. 14 years ago, no one was offering an online support group. The procedure was cut and dried. My overarching feelings were intense and revolved around true grief about changing what and the way i ate. So even though i read everything i could get my mitts on, the actual experience was nothing like i imagined it would be.

Ive had root canal that was worse.

Prepare for changes by having the right kinds of food around. Eat small. Rest a lot. Sleep. Youre Sleeping Beauty right now but soon youll wake up and see the real you in the magic mirror.

Had the same surgery that you are having. Mine was done on Jan 19, 2021. I have been doing fine. No complications. Not going to lie you it is challenging getting used to the changes in the way you eat. I am in the soft food stage now and it is challenging knowing how much to eat and when to stop but for the most part it hasn't been to bad. My major challenge was getting sinus infection last week. That was no fun. Everyone on this chat forum is very nice and very helpful. Main thing follow your surgeons suggestions and directions after the surgery. Good Luck!

Hi Reminyx! I was extremely nervous the night before/morning of my surgery. I had a sleeve gastrectomy on 1/11/21. Besides being put under, I was most anxious about the unknowns after surgery.... how much pain will I be in, complications, etc... I couldn’t wait to be on the other side! But I have to tell you I worried myself sick for nothing. Anesthesia & surgery went great! No complications... the only issue I had was intense acid reflux about a week post op. Adjusted my meds & all is good!
You are going to do great!!!! We will all be thinking about you on Monday! Good luck & hoping for a speedy recovery! Keep us posted!

Day 2. So much pain!!! Holy shit. I slept most of day 1 and today my back and the few areas they cut are agony. Trying to stay positive. Hopefully I can go home and be a bit more comfortable .... idk though.

Sorry you are in pain Reminyx. It will get better. Sleep as much as you can as your body is healing and the anesthesia takes a while to get out of your system. Walking will help some of the pain if it is gas from the surgery. I hope you feel better soon!
