I was just reading a recipe for root beer. I hate root beer, but before I hate it, I loved it. They used to sell these little root beer hard candies when I was a kid and we'd suck on those all day.
Once my mom decided to try making root beer. We had a Watkins man in our neighborhood, and for you youngsters, a Watkins man was a peddler who sold bottled goods like vitamins and food flavorings. A popular flavoring was root beer, from which it was pretty simple to make a gallon of root beer for a picnic on a hot day. The only unusual ingredient was food-grade dry ice.
Anyway, one day my mom made a huge container of root beer and I drank some of it. I loved it so much, I ended up drinking about a half-gallon. By that time, its charm had worn off and I started vomiting it up, and this went on and on and on until I was empty of everything. I ran off to the treehouse to hide before Mom figured out that I was the one who drank so much of the root beer.
So there are several points to the story, the biggest one being I cannot STAND root beer any more. But the fact that my behavior foreshadowed by eating disorder can't be overlooked, and the dishonesty, sneakery and self-denial included must be included, as these "discipline' are the things that brought me to my eating disorder.. But while I was reflecting on that story today, I began to wonder which soft drinks American's find most attractive today. I wasn't surprised to see Coke at the top, but I was shocked it wasn't tied with Pepsi. The chart below shows popularity from 1995 to 2000. Enjoy.
