Slow Loser- Am I the Only One?

Becca

I am WEEK 6 today. I have lost 18 lbs since surgery. I am very pleased at losing 18 lbs but also frustrated. I read all the time about people having large losses the first few months and then it tapering off. I was a slow loser before surgery too. I managed to lose 20 lbs pre surgery over the course of about 9 months.

Right now, I have not lost anything in 8 days. I am very physically active and I am only 5'0 tall. Pre-surgery I was working out 4 times a week doing running, strength, swimming, and etc. Starting at week 3 after surgery I got back into my full routine and I do running, elliptical, and strength 3 x a week and sometimes add a fourth day of swimming or something else.

I am scared that I am going to be the "one" this surgery doesn't work for. Again, I am thankful for my 18 lbs. I just feel like I should be further along and this is supposed to be the big loss time. I know we are not supposed to count calories but I do it along with tracking all my other things like protein. I end up around 600 cal on non-work out days and around 800 or 900 on work out days before deducting the calories I burn, which is normally around 400. I make sure to get 60 protein g a day. I do know that even though I drink lots of water I can always improve in this area. I can manage less calories if I am drinking shakes for my protein vs. eating for my protein.

I would like to know if there are others who truly lost slow in the first few months. And if it continued slow but steady or if it dropped off or what.

Thanks everyone

Hi Becca, there is a natural plateau that happens after several weeks. There is a thread by zzvazquez that explains why that is. There are other tricks to try, like tracking your protein intake, getting all your liquids in. Relax and continue to follow the plan outlined by your team, and you will lose weight. I'll bet you'll be a BIG LOSER by the end of the year.

Becca I think a lot of us fear not being able to loose the amount of pounds we want too, others have told me that muscle weighs more so with all the exercise that you are doing that might be the issue. but also like others have said, please stick to your plan from your dr and nutrionist, one day you'll weigh and see a big drop. can you tell a difference in your clothes with the weight loss and all the exercise you've been doing? I haven't been a big looser as fast as I thought either, keep loosing the same 4 or 5 pounds over and over, but I know what my problem is, I haven't been very good on getting all my protein in and doing enough exercise. I have been doing better this week because I am changing my attitude that if I want the rest of these pounds to come off I have to be totally committed to it and stop my laziness. you've been doing well exercising and eating right so I pray you see a drop on the scale soon to encourage you for all your efforts. don't give up you've come this far I know you'll finish the race as a "WINNER" Donna

Becca,

I am not completely positive but 60 Grams of protein sounds like it is not enough. Also your caloric intake isn't enough either. Your body tells you that it isn't getting what it needs. You are too active for such low caloric and protein intake. If you talk to your center (nutritionist) I bet she would tell you to increase the protein. Your body may be in protective mode. Of course I could be all wet but your center can help you better than I can.
