Welcome.

First of all I do hope your Doctor is a recognized Bariatric Surgeon and uses a Center of Excellence hospital to perform surgery.

Secondly, I hope by now that you have had a good presentation by the doctor and his staff and that they have given you all kinds of materials to look at and review.

I chose gastric bypass too. My primary reason for selecting this versus the gastric sleeve is that it is the gold standard. Now, I know more and more data is being gathered with respect to the gastric sleeve and it has gained tremendous popularity.

What I liked about the gastric bypass was an immediate control of my Type 2 diabetes. From the very first day post op up to present day (11/4/2013 to now) I have not had any medications to control diabetes and/or high blood pressure at all.

My A1C comes in at 5.4 to 5.9.

But long term evidence is gathering about the sleeve; so take a closer look. Ask the question to the Doctor of gastric bypass vs gastric sleeve. Ask him why he chooses one over the other. Does he always recommend gastric bypass?

Those kinds of questions, if answered, will help you gain better insight to his recommendation.

Thirdly, the procedure should be laparoscopic at this point. This minimally evasive approach makes for a very quick recovery.

Keep asking questions.

We are here.

Welcome.

Ralph

Hi Paula! WELCOME to the Forum!!!

I had the gastric bypass 19 months ago. I wanted and needed the bypass because I wanted a procedure that gave me the most help. I wanted my intestine redone so I could not absorb as many calories. Before surgery, I looked at food and gained weight so I needed all the help I could get. I am so happy with my bypass, I would do it over in a second. The weight came off pretty fast for me and although I have more to lose I really feel great, my health problems have gone and I love being able to wear a normal size 16 instead of a huge size 5X. Surgery was much less painful than I anticipated. I had it done laparoscopically and I couldn't be happier. :) Life is really good!!! I have been extremely overweight for many years, tried many diets and nothing worked til I had my bypass.

Hints I will pass along for after your surgery is to eat slowly, chew your food well, don't eat so much as to stretch your new tiny tummy out. At first you will feel full after only eating a few bites. Your stomach capacity will slowly increase over a year so you will eventually be able to eat 1/2 cup or so at a time. The main thing is you don't want to stretch it too much or too fast.

Good luck to you!
