Surgery 3/9/20!

Post op you may have pain, including gas in you system that hurts in chest and shoulder area. The blow you up with air for surgery. Walking around the ward will help that. Some people have pain; others don't. You will start drinking fluids and your tiny, swollen sleeve will get used to that. I threw up a few times in the hospital when I tried to drink water, but then was able to do so.

Many go home the next day; I did. Your bariatric practice should give you instructions for what to eat and how to progress. You can start walking pretty much immediately, a few minutes, then build up.

If you do some searching on this site you will find lots of info. On YouTube there are many videos of people who have had the surgery and their day to day experiences.

Are you having sleeve or bypass? There are some differences.

a liquid diet is so far from normal, it's really hard to stick to. i never had to pre-op. when i had my RYGB there was no pre-op prep. after, i was nauseated by the thought of food and the liquid diet was so appreciated. it cannot be stressed enough that getting in a healthy amount of water makes everything better and you advance more quickly. aside from a horrible bout with constipation, i really didn't have any trouble post-op, and the pounds just melted away--60 pounds down in 2 months.

keep yourself busy, go out & window-shop, always sipping from your water bottle. notice everything around you as you walk, especially the people you see and the sizes of their bodies. cruise through your grocery store without buying anything. memorize the shelf numbers where they keep the jell-o and the broths and soups. create a diet to follow and make sure you have at least one blank book to use as a food diary. if it helps, buy one post-op outfit you'll be able to wear when you're 20 or 30 pounds down. tack it to your wall so you see it all the time.

different people have different tolerance levels, but many have virtually no pain at all. others just wanna die from it. just bear this in mind and perhaps before you go for surgery, study & practice pain-chasing breathing exercises and mind-calming affirmations. write them down. it's very typical in the obese mind to forget the positive and zoom in on the negative.

whatever you experience, it will only last a short time. then you'll be in the difficult place of learning how to eat for the rest of your life. most of us don't know how. you must learn it.

I’m having the sleeve. Did lots of research and felt that was gonna be best for me. I will definitely get on YouTube! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Such a good idea. I wish I would have found this website earlier. It would have helped a ton to be able to read on this site through the process.

I agree that the diet changes are gonna be the real test. The most difficult thing in my mind is figuring all that out. I think I’m very surprised by how “weak” I am. I feel like I’m having a conversation with myself several times a day talking myself out of having just a bite of something everyone else is eating. I didn’t realize how strong my food cravings were! Shocked me a little.
I found a fitness/food journal and have been using that since I started the pre op diet just trying to get used to using it. I appreciate the insight. I am definitely the type that wants to know what lies ahead!

I sure know what you're saying about being "weak." It's hard not to sample stuff.
 
I have been on the full liquid diet since 2/3, tomorrow will be 4 weeks for me. 2 week pre-op and now 2 weeks post op. I am a pretty stubborn and strong will person when I am on a mission.

Yesterday was my first really weak day. There was ravioli, load mashed potatoes and a hot and fresh rotisserie chicken in the kitchen. I looked at it longingly. Fat brain said take a few bites. I resisted and left the house and went shopping.

Before I headed back home. I asked my family to put all the food away. Got home and had some chicken broth and protein water. Another day conquered. Just take the liquid diet one day at time.

Post op its a lot easier because you will not be hungry at all. Yesterday was the first day I felt hungry since surgery on 2/13 but it really was not hunger. Fat Brian sees food and says go eat it.

Post op you will be on a mission to stay hydrated and not get dehydrated. It should be your sole purpose to avoid an ER trip. Healing it happening and walking to get rid of those awful uncomfortable gas pains. Food will be last thing on your mind.

Awesome job! Both getting away from the food and also asking your family to put it away before you got home. That's the way to do it, congratulations. :)

Well that is awesome to hear! The willpower!!!! Today is the first day I haven’t felt super hungry. 7 days into the diet and it’s better. I feel like it’s worse at work. I work nights in a busy ER and everyone is always sharing food and snacks. It’s never healthy either of course. Nothing is open of course so lots of Mcds and chips and whatnot. I’ve been off two nights and done well. Tonight I work but I feel more in control. We will see!
