Surgery-date and a couple of questions

Hello everyone, my wife and I finally have our Roux-en-Y surgery dates scheduled. Hers is 6/1 and mine is 6/15 it has been quite a roller coaster ride. As others have mentioned it has not been a great experience at the bariatric surgery center we selected. The surgeon has a great reputation and is highly regarded that is what matters most.

My stomach is somewhat sensitive. There is quite a bit of information on vitamins on this site but would like to get some feedback on what works best for people with stomach issues. Our pre-op is 5/19 and will ask this same question but have no real faith they will have a good answer for me. It sounds like there is really not much of a pre-op diet with this center. This site has answered most of my questions regarding bariatric life before and after. I’m grateful to each and everyone of you who participated in my peace of mind. My anxiety is almost non-existent now.

I am locked in for surgery regardless of my weight is at this point at least that is what my surgeon told me. My compulsion to eat is more than I like but working to at least stay at my last weigh-in weight can anyone else relate.

Congrats on your surgery date!! I didn’t have a preop diet at all, and that’s based on you and your surgeon. It’s more common to have a preop liquid diet, but it’s not out of the ordinary not to have one. I had to stay over a certain BMI, which is why I didn’t have a preop diet. However I lost 17 lbs before surgery, so my last weekend before the operation, I did indulge a lot with things I knew I wouldn’t have for a really long time, so I can relate to what you’re saying about food. Keep doing what you’ve been doing, a treat now and then won’t hurt, but remember the mindset that you’ll need to keep control after surgery.

Hello Jniz, I am only two weeks out from the same surgery. I was told to get the chewable multi chewy bites also the chewy calcium from Bariatric Advantage. After surgery I was not able to get them down at all. When I went in to get my drain pulled (had a leak during surgery) the person who pulled my drain was asking how I was doing with the vitamins I told her I could not even take them so I had not been taking any. (this was wrong of me Whoops) Well she said with the bypass I can take the pills do not need the chewy ones. this has made life much better. Ask your DR about the Ultra Solo with Iron as you only need to take one. one time a day. that is so nice don't get me wrong it is very big but I am used to it now well kind of I do still look at how big it is. same with the Calcium the pills are better then the chewy ones. Calcium are 3 big pills 2 times per day. I have found I take them over a 15 to 30 min time span to help them just feel better in my new pouch.
Most of all Good Luck to you and your wife. I was shocked on how little pain I did have after surgery the pain was when I moved once I was in a spot in bed no pain, but moving sucked. They got me up to walk the same day of surgery. This is what was good for me. they said I had to have 3 walks before I could go home I had 3 in before the night was over. (not long walks just in the hallways of the hospital) But the walking mad the gas pain so much better that I just kept going out for walks. I had no pain when walking so this was a good time for me. I also then to go into the bathroom with out a RN with me.. They didn't like that put let me tell you I did.

Congrats to you and Mrs. James on your surgery dates, that is super exciting. My program recommended either Optisource Bariatric Chewable Vitamins or Fusion brand. Both are taken 4 times a day and cost about $30 a month. I use the Optisource, only because my program sells them (at a discount) so I can just pick them up when I go in. They don't bother my stomach but I do take them right before I eat.

Congrats on you and the Mrs. surgery dates!
I am currently pre-op. I had a lot of trouble finding vitamins I could tolerate as well. I have found I can’t take any multi with iron. I have to take the iron separately, at least a couple hour apart from the multi. I finally found a good vitamin combo for me last month after months of trying different brands/formulas. I take Celebrate One chewable for my multi and Natural Factors Easy Iron chewable. Hopefully, I will continue to tolerate them post-op. I can’t help with the calcium since I don’t take it. I have unusually high blood calcium levels naturally (weird since I don’t eat dairy).
I wish you and your wife the best of luck!

So glad you got your surgery dates! Vitamins, just like protein, can sometimes be hard to find one that is well tolerated or you might just get lucky the first time like I did with Celebrate Vitamins. I would suggest just getting a small amount to start and see how it goes. I buy 90 days worth but didn't start out that way. Get small bottles and see how you do. There are lots of choices to make it easier on bariatric patients.... chewable tablets, soft chews (like a starburst or tootsie roll), liquid, smaller size capsules for bariatric patients and even patches.

Congrats the surgery dates!
I had a very strict pre-op diet for 2 1/2 weeks - all liquid. And a very strict 3 week all liquid diet post op. I have now moved on to soft foods. I am discovering that every surgeon is different so good for you for asking asking asking. You have to be your own advocate.
I say do what you can to least maintain. If you can make any changes now it will be easier on you post op. Try the shakes, get some sugar free popsicles and jello.
As for vitamins, I lucked out with the first one's I tried - Bariatric Advantage chewables. They resemble, and taste like, big fruity TUMS. I eat them right before my breakfast to get them out of the way.
I have heard some sites will sell you sample packs of their vitamins so you don't have to fully invest in a whole bottle only to find you can't tolerate them. I also know there are liquids and softies.
You've got this!
