Surgery in a few short days

Time has flown since i first posted my intentions of gastric bypass back in may. I was disappointed i had a 3 month waiting period, but now, i have been approved and scheduled for august 30. I am so scared and excited all at the same time. My mother has finally come around with supporting me on this. She lost her brother back in 1973 when they first starting doing bypass to a blood clot nine days after surgery. She was not supportive at all, but now understands my health issues are my biggest risk if i dont do the surgery. She will be there with me on the day it happens. I keep telling myself that i do can anything to my body but it doesn't change my mind about food. So i have spent the last 3 months getting my mind in a good place. Im so excited and ready to begin my new life.

GCOOPER-It's always a wise move to put a great amount of thought into any elective surgery. There has been so much progress in bariatric surgery to make it safer and more effective. I started my research on WLS almost 7 years ago but didn't have it until 2012.

I found an interesting article about the history of WLS:
The use of staples in surgery started during World War II. Doctors from more advanced countries used staples to attach tissues together. In 1968, Dr. Edward E. Mason performed the first gastric bypass aimed at treating obesity. Although gastric bypass is safer and more effective than intestinal bypass, there were still several complications that arose. Examples of these included internal leakage, lung collapse, acute gastric dilatation and blood clots. Most of his work since then has been aimed at improving surgery methods to eliminate these complications. In 1982, after several modifications, a new method was invented, called VBG. (Vertical banded gastroplasty, also known as stomach stapling) It has fewer complications compared to its predecessors and is an effective weight loss procedure

Hi GC, it sounds like you are mentally ready for this and getting ready for the nessasary life changes you need to make. I am glad your mother has come around, she must have realized that we have come a long way since 1973 and as far as that goes we have come a long way in the past 10 and 20 years. It is wonderful now that you have her support in this, I think that is very valuable and also helps us heal and feel better about what we are doing, we have had enough people telling us thgat we just need to do this and do that and if we only had will power we could do it, so I very happy for you having that support. I had my three daughters with me in the hospital, my son would have been ther but I didn't want to worry him so I didn't tell him until I was all healed up, he was living 2 hours away at the time and didn't have transportation up here besides he worries to much about me:rolleyes: My thought and prayers are with you. Tom
