Surgery in September

I just received a call from my surgeons office. They finally have all my results back from pre-op testing and my surgery is now scheduled for 9/16! I will start my two week mostly liquid diet next Monday and have a class with the nutritionist on Tuesday. They did say that while they are in there they are going to remove my gallbladder at the same time. So excited that everything is moving forward and I can't wait for the next chapter in my life to begin!

Are you having an open procedure or laparoscopic? I had RYGB and they took my gallbladder at the same time, but I had an open procedure. If you're having the sleeve, it's usually done laparoscopically. This is something you should talk to your surgeon about.

If I had it to do over again, I'd still have an open procedure. It might take a little longer to recover from, but pulling a gallbladder through one of those little holes has to cause post-op pain. And if they remove anything else, like your old stomach, that would hurt, too.

I think the reason I have had such a great experience with so few side effects is because I had an open procedure done by one of the most highly rated surgeons in the field at that time. Everything went as expected & once I got over the initial challenges everyone has, I was buying new clothes & hiking in the wilderness. And of course, I lost 115 pounds, though I had planned only to lose 100.

Congrats, dearie!

When I last talked to my surgeon, she was going to do the RYGB laparoscopically. I didn't think to ask if that would switch it to an open procedure. I will have to check on that tomorrow. Thanks for the idea. I was just so excited that everything was happening that I didn't think to ask any questions just then. I am guessing she gets that a lot because they said they would have a follow up call with me tomorrow to see if I had any questions yet :).

If she goes for an open procedure, you'll have a 7-inch vertical scar from your navel to the bottom of your breastbone. But from what I've been reading & seeing, people who go laparoscopic have several scars all over their bellies. And apparently, sometimes a surgeon needs to make a lot of entry points because the person's abdomen is so fatty & there's so much mushed together inside. I've heard a lot of people in this group describe aching & pain after laparoscopic surgery. I didn't know that was possible. One big selling point of laparoscopic surgery was the lack of pain, relative to an open procedure. But I know I didn't suffer as much as so many others here have described. My operation was just textbook, predictable, & things worked out the way they were supposed to. I'm vain about the scar, but who wants to see a 68-year-old woman in a belly shirt, anyway?o_O

I actually had emergency gallbladder removal 6 months prior to my RNY, both surgeries were done laparoscopically. I would think that your surgeon can definitely do it in one laparoscopic surgery. My 3 incision scars from from the gallbladder surgery are tiny, even way smaller than from my RNY.

Congratulations miss, so exciting!!!

I had bypass with gallbladder removal. There are 5 one inch incisions from the bypass and one extra incision on my right side for the camera for the gallbladder. The gallbladder was removed through the largest incision, on the left side and of the 6 incisions, it was the only one that hurt.

Change of plans..I am having surgery in October now on the 15th. High risk of blood clots is the reason. Soooo ultrasound of my legs making sure no clots lingering... My doc wants to consult his colligues on the matter. See him back on the 25th of this month to see where we are at. Bummed but rather error on the side of caution.
Told him he drew the Short straw with me..
Still very much want this done. Having said that I need to accept it may not happen. I don't even know at this point. Haven't been told no. Per se...but need to think about how these people doing this feels.
My doctor gave me pause for his reaction to ask if this could kill me.
Man!!!

I'm on xeralto for a couple of years. Nothing can be done other than a plan to thin blood during and after surgery. The thinner I'm on is not good during surgery so I stop that med 2 days before surgery. My doctor is the best there is...he is looking at this from his experience and his team he works with. I'm putting my faith in him and felt he hasn't given up doing the procedure. Just wants to look at anything to shorten the time in the OR is all (gulp). I'm at a loss at this moment..kind of rocked my world when we were done discussing it all. I agreed to post ponning it...but just never occurred to me this was such a worry!!! Feel good and feel healthy in day to day.

Sorry to hear it Redy but it sounds like you are in great hands. Hopefully your ultrasound goes well and your doctor can come up with a plan so that you can move forward in October. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
