Can anyone let me know how long the surgery is on average? I am having the rny bypass. Only reason I'm asking is my mother cannot come with me due to the Covid but she is allowed after my surgery is over. She is going to wait in her car so I wanted to give her an estimate on the time. Of course I forgot to ask my Dr when I saw him.

If you're having an open procedure with full anesthetia, staples and sutures, you will probably be in the hospital for a couple of days. Surgery takes at least a few hours if it's an open procedure. If you're having a laparoscopic bypass or sleeve, you may be able to go home the same day and the surgery may not take that long. But if general anesthetia is used, you will not be able to zip in and out. They will keep you for hours and you will have to be there for a while before the surgery even begins so that they can medicate you and check you out properly.

Keep in mind that last week diet & weight loss immediately before surgery is what shrinks up your enlarged liver, giving the doc room to safely do what needs to be done. The more you lose, the stricter you adhere to that pre-op diet - the less likely you will have surgical complications. So you can effect this, to some degree.
