Tortilla options

There are a couple tortilla brands out there with really, really great macro nutritional content for those interested in lowering caloric intake. These are solid options for diabetic / carb conscious folks

Mission brand, carb balance series tortillas. Sold at wal mart, and my go-to option.
Calories: 70
Fat 2.5g
Protein 5g
Carbs 19g
Dietary Fiber 13g
Net: 6g carbs
My family has been eating these exclusively for the past 3-4 years. No they aren't as stretchy & chewy as the raw delicious ones, but they are 90% as good and the flavor is all there. Great for wraps, also great to cut / tear up and use as chip substitutes, dip them in hummus, etc. Look at that fiber! And bonus protein! There's a few different sizes, and you can also get in white or wheat, with similar but varying nutritional content.

Ole Xtreme Wellness, high fiber series tortillas. Sold as lots of major retailers, and amazon.
Calories: 50
Fat: 1.5g - some of this is added flax seed oil
Protein 5g
Carbs 15g
Dietary Fiber 11g
These are a softer, wheat variety but with equally impressive nutritional content. They don't stretch very well, but are awesome for wraps & chips. I have ordered these from amazon a number of times, but they have since become available at the Kroger stores.

Stuff I routinely make using either of these -
Basic sandwich wrap...meat or tuna/chicken salad, pickle, cheese, fresh spinach & lettuce, cherry tomatos. Use enough vegies to not need mayo.
Breakfast Burrito - scrambled egg, cheese, crumbled sausage or bacon, salsa
Quesadilla - cheese, or add left-over chicken breast pieces
Burrito or taco (the super obvious choices) chicken, shrimp, black bean, refried bean, steak, grilled peppers, mushrooms, onions, forever and ever...
Enchiladas - buy the old el paso green or red enchilada sauce and follow the super easy recipe on can
Pizza...yeah, smear a little spaghetti sauce, sprinkle cheese and add some other toppings as desired. Bake 425 for 5-8 minutes until desired crispiness.
Chips..cut them up or just rip into pieces. Dip into hummus, roasted red pepper Sabra is my all-time favorite. You need healthy fats.

you can also you can also make your own tortillas, like the Mexicans do since the days of the Mayans. It's the easiest thing in the world to do and you can control what goes into your food, which is really important to me.

I bought a six-pack of Trader Joe's gluten-free, wheat-free, brown rice tortillas the other day thinking they were going to be awesome. Well they are not. It's one of the worst purchases I've ever made and I'm going to take them back. Aside from the fact that they have a whopping 130 calories each, they do not Bend. They are like discs of plastic. You can put them in the microwave to soften them and they still come out hard. And when you try to fold them, they crack into pieces.

On top of all that, they don't even taste good.

I am usually a much better label reader but I love brown rice and I love tortillas and I just grabbed this package in a panic while only five of us were allowed to be in the store at a time. I will not make that mistake again.

Thank you for the suggestions, Gzar. I see you had surgery in October, and like Brenda, your doctor used a robotic method. So how's it going for you?

What brand and where did you buy El?
The brand is Crystal Farms, but I don't remember which grocery store I purchased them from (it is either Kroger or Tom Thumb/Vons). The brand website says that they are available in 2 flavors at: Acme, Aldi, Coborn's, Cub Foods, Fareway, Festival, Food City, HyVee, Lunds & Byerlys, Piggly Wiggly, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, SuperOne and Woodman's Markets.

Thanks for asking! I'm very pleased with the surgery and my results. Just over 6 months in, I'm down over 70 lbs and within 20 lbs from my goal weight and it's really been easy for me, though I do actively work towards it. I'm walking, running and biking and slowly getting back into weight lifting. I've had no complications, and I feel great.
