Upcoming surgery March 17, 2015

Hello all,
Thought I would join in this forum as I too am taking the plunge, and will have a gastric bypass with Nissen revision done on the 17th.
I will value the support and learned wisdom of the bariatric community.
While I am not necessarily looking forward to the surgery itself, I am looking forward to living my life a little easier than it has been for the past several years.
And hopefully adding some more years while escaping some of the horrors I have witnessed others live (and not live) through.
I am currently unsure of my current weight as my Family doctor does not care enough to have proper scale equipment to weigh someone over 350 lbs. I guess I will be finding a new family doctor soon.
Last time I weighed in on a proper scale was last spring in May and I was at 425 lbs then with BMI >52.
That which does not kill us will only make us stronger...

WELCOME to the Forum!!!

It took me 10 yrs to decide to go ahead with my gastric bypass surgery. I was very afraid. Only after some serious health issues surfaced did I decide to go for it, and it was the best decision of my life!

The surgery was much less painfull than I expected, and as my journey progressed, I actually enjoyed the experience of managing my diet and watching my fat melt away quickly and becoming healthier and feeling better than I have felt for years. Buying normal size clothes instead of the tent size 5X I used to wear is also WONDERFUL! Sitting in a chair without worrying that I may not fit is a great feeling. :)

May I suggest that you can go online at Walmart and order a scale that will weigh you for a relatively low price. Some people don't believe in weighing often but I weigh myself everytime I walk in the bathroom, probably at least 10 times a day and I feel this keeps me aware of what foods help or hinder my weight loss. If I gain a pound I can do something about it before it becomes 5 lb. Just my opinion.

Once you have your new 2 oz. sized stomach, take care to not overstretch it out. Yes as time goes on it will stretch somewhat so you can eventually eat a small meal. I tried to eat just a couple ounces at a time for the first year so just a tiny amount of food made me feel full like I just ate Thanksgiving dinner. Eat protein before anything else, it helps you lose weight and makes you feel full, and drink plenty of water so the fat will be flushed out of the body.

Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress!

Thank You Cheyenne for your kind words!
Like you it has taken me 10 years or more to get to this point. I wasted several years fighting with insurance companies and disappearing clinics. I have finally scraped together the cash to have the surgery on my own.
Yes my biggest concern is protein, but it looks like the unjury products will provide adequate levels so as not to damage my heart or cause any other muscle loss. As long as the hunger cravings are diminished I think I will be fine with the diet and maintaining my new self.

Hello. Congratulations to you on making a difference. You have made the ultimate challenge and I am sure you will be thankful you did. Previously you mentioned UNJURY products, which are excellent, you can also try Premier Protein. These are ready made drinks but only come in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

I just realized your surgery is just 4 days away. I know you are excited!!!

Let me know how you are doing and we are all here if you have any questions or just need some moral support.

Good luck my friend.

Good luck to you on your surgery.

This is a life saving minimally evasive and therefore a whole lot less pain than most surgeries; thanks to the advances that have been made over the past 10 years or so.

You talk about your family doctor. What about your Bariatric surgeon and his/her staff? Don't they have the right equipment to weigh you properly. This sound really weird.

I hope you have found a bariatric surgeon who has done 100s if not thousands of procedures already. I hope you are going to a hospital that is recognized as a bariatric center of excellence. I hope you have been educated as much as possible pre-op, by your doctor, your nutritionist and your bariatric psychologist. If you haven't I would have some very strong concerns with proceeding. This is my opinion only. Just trying to give you some perspective on how I went about selecting a hospital a surgeon and a support team.
