Weird Tastes?

Hi folks. I just had my surgery on the 28th (two days out today!!). I'm working on trying to drink stuff. I've found that many things I drank/ate on the 2-week liquid diet taste a lot stronger now than they did. I have some sugar-free jello and it's way stronger than it was before (and it's the same batch--I had one left from before the surgery). Protein shakes are also tasting much stronger. I've been using Cirkul for the water because the flavors are sugar free and I need some taste, but the ones I usually get taste strong.

I finally tried a bit of Lipton hot tea with splenda and omg, that was so freaking good. It went down easier and didn't hurt, I'm doing more of that tomorrow. I'm now wondering if the warm soups will help as well. I know broth/bouillon are way too salty and strong now.

Anyone have that happen, your tastes change with surgery? I'm counting the days to cottage cheese, applesauce, and sweet potatoes.

It's pretty common to have taste changes after surgery. Sometimes it is temporary, sometimes it lasts longer. Sweet sensitivity seems to be very common, but I know some people have radically different tastes. I've lost cravings for things I used to crave, and that is okay. I think my sensitivity to sweet has made vegetables much more tasty to me lately, as I can't seem to get enough.

Yeah my tastes changed drastically too I don’t like any kind of meat that much anymore even though I love the smell of barbecue . I only like hot dogs for for some reason it’s weird . I used to like yogurt and cottage cheese now I can’t stand them . Now I love fruit which I never really used to care about

Hi Charlayne - We had our surgeries the same day ! I had RNY at Kaiser hospital Monday 9-28-20.
I do not like plain broth it's too plain and way to salty - I am enjoying the broth from a regular can of chicken noodle soup
I am just straining the broth out - Yum .
I am also liking the premier protein shakes - yesterday I did chocolate shake with a few ice cubes and a scoop of dry peanut butter powder added in - was so good
I drink half the shake at once then the other half a couple hours later - right now I am having peaches and cream shake with 4 slices of frozen peaches added in - then I nutra bullet it to make it smooth - very good . I think the protein is really helping me have some energy once again.
I am feeling good too - not taking the pain meds and only having pain when I bend over to pick something up - so overall feeling good
AM glad I did this and that the surgery is behind me - yesterday I noticed I was full even though it was time for more protein - weird feeling
I too am looking forward to being able to have soft food phase - I did have some applesauce yesterday and it was great
My doctors instructions were that after 3 or 4 days post op I can begin to mix in some items from stage two if I feel up to it
Lets keep in touch since we are at the same stages - Take care

Ohhh! Peaches. I have some, and some of the peach Premier drink. I didn't like the plain drink. You're already putting peaches in. Guess what I'm having tomorrow!! I'm looking forward to the stage 2. I may try the applesauce tonight. I'm needing a bit of....something.

Hope you like it Charlayne - I too need something more than broth and tea
today is day 5 for us - This morning I mixed a chocolate protein with 2 scoops of the peanut butter powder and most of a banana - after I run it thru my nurti bullet it is completely smooth - i figure it is also giving me extra nutrition on top of satisfying taste - I will drink it over the next few hours.
I do have a little applesauce thru out the day - about a half container by days end and yesterday I had about 3 oz of instant mashed potatoes with some gravy from a jar - was warm and delish - only a few baby spoons full but god it was good !
I have had no problems adding these few little things in - a little something each day and we will both be at pureed food stage in no time !!!
I am meeting my water goals - so maybe that is helping
Let me know how you are doing and what you are eating

I've shared this dish a few times here and it's good for the puree phase if you're willing to put turkey in a blender. If so, puree the turkey and take it out, then put instant mashed potatoes and hot water and a teaspoon or so of powdered gravy mix in and mix that up and add it to the turkey and smash up the cranberry sauce and put that next to it. Sometimes after I blend each thing I just put them all back in the blender and give it a quick pulse and eat it like that. Believe it or not, I still like to eat this mush for Thanksgiving to this day!
