MET-Rx Peanut Butter Pretzel protein bars. I swear, I lived on these for a couple of years. They are not low-calorie however and they have plenty of sugar and salt. They are huge and provide 30 grams of protein but contain 410 calories.
I used to break these in half and I would just nibble on one half all morning and then I would nibble on the other half all afternoon and then I'd have a regular dinner. But when I was hiking, I would put a dozen of these in my backpack and I wouldn't bring any other food.
Caveat: these are definitely not for the faint of heart and not for beginners. They taste like they should be bad for you. And they are covered with this kind of caramel yogurt dip, like frosting on the bottom and up the sides. I used a potato peeler to shave this off because I didn't want the calories and I didn't like the sweetness.
I used to buy these by the 12-pack, back in the day when they offered 12. Now you can only get them in 9, as far as I know. If you buy them individually they are usually around $3 or more. If you buy them by the box, they're about $2.25.
The rule of thumb, according to my nutritionist is that every 10 calories of food should contain 1 gram of protein. In other words if you ate 500 calories, you got 50 grams of protein. Most protein supplements are off in this department, but you can make up for it in other foods you eat during the day.
Thanks to the members of this group, I have now purchased a huge number of Premier Protein shakes in three flavors: vanilla chocolate, and caramel. They also have cookies and cream, banana, peach, strawberry, fudge and pina colada and I don't know what else.
I bought a bunch of extracts, beginning with rum and vanilla. Then at Target the other day I saw that they had all this syrup you pour over ice chips to make a snow cone. I bought three different flavors of those.
I have protein powder and powdered peanut butter and I'd doll these shakes up with something like that and I add soft fruit if I have it: raspberries, bananas, peaches, strawberries. applesauce, pineapple. Frozen fruit is just as good as fresh.
Sometimes I also make a little magic milk to add to this. I can get one of these protein shakes up to 50 grams of protein very easily.
Depending on how much mixing needs to be done, I will either put the stuff in a blender, or use my blender cup.
I used to buy MET-Rx bars at Safeway in the protein bar section. I bought these Premier Protein shakes for $7.99 / 4-pack at Target, and they have them online so you can have them delivered.
