So I had my first checkup 15 days out from my surgery. Dr was very happy with how I am doing. I went from 318 to 294. I'm doing pretty well with the pureed foods thanks to some great suggestions for bypassing pureed meats from others on here who've gone before me. However, I ran into another issue and am wondering if anyone else may have some insight. Not looking for medical advise just wanting to see if anyone else has had this issue and how it worked out for them.

On Monday I was in the ER because I had broken a bone in my foot, but that's not the real issue the doctors did some lab work and told me I had supper high uric acid and that I was also having an attack of Gout. This was so painful I couldn't walk, and the ER doctor told me it's because I am eating such high protein diet.

My surgeon said there is meds I can take but she is sending me to a kidney specialist because Gout has to do with how your kidneys work. She also said there is no way I could live on a low protein diet which is what most doctors tell patients with Gout.

So I have an appointment with an orthopedist and a Nephrologist coming up to dell with the broken bone in my foot and my gout issue.

Still good news I dropped 24 pounds....Yeah

It sounds like you're doing very well and being very smart. Your issues are medical and require medical intervention. Many people would just put up with stuff like this, but as you've shown, your symptoms may be indicative of a bigger problem. I wish you well and look forward to hearing more about your story as you recover.

I had an appointment with the Nephrologist about my gout and how it affects my kidneys. She told me it was all animal proteins and many vegetables that can cause high purine, which in turn creates uric acid in the body. She said most people think red meat and red wine are the things that cause the highest purines in our blood but that's not true. Apparently sardines and anchovies have the highest purines which is a what causes uric acid. She put me on some meds which will hopefully help limit the attacks of Gout. The nutritionists sent me this guide to give me an idea of what I should try to limit or keep to a minimum in the future.

Now I just need to see the orthopedists and find out what they want to do with the broken bone and the bone chip I have floating around in my foot. I am hoping to put off any kind of surgery until I have lost a little more weight so I can recover quicker and be better able to physically do PT.

Yikes! That low purine list sure isn't ideal for a post bariatric surgery patient. That being said, eggs are a complete protein, meaning they have every amino acid the body needs. And they're very versatile. I hope you like them! You can add an egg to just about anything to give it a protein bump. I used to have a recipe for oatmeal that added an egg. It made it very rich, but you would never know that there was an egg in there!

I'm glad that they got some answers to you so quickly. Hopefully they're as fast with help for the foot! Good luck.

Missy,

I've been looking for an oatmeal recipe that had egg in it but most come up with fried eggs on top. Is it just the egg whites you stir into the oats? It sounds good and adds protein which is something I need and would love to try. If you can find it please share it with me. Hope you have a great weekend:)

yes eggs and dairy with protein are going to be your friends it seems. My mom and husband have had gout. It can be controlled with diet I believe, neither is on medication for it. Good to hear from you.

FinallyMe,

My doctor said I have to have the meds because my uric acid levels were off the charts. She said later after I get to the stage of eating regular foods I can with the help of the nutritionist create a meal plan to exclude most if not all the foods that can cause the buildup of purines in my body but still give me the protein I need. Some of my favorite things are listed in the moderate and high columns, like spinach and asparagus and soybeans and lentils. But at this point I am willing to try anything, so I don't go through that pain again.

The recipe was for butterscotch oatmeal and was pre- surgery so idk where it is or where I got it.

I DO know that you added an entire egg in while the liquid was still heating up, so it doesn't cook in clumps. Or you can add a bit of the warm liquid into the egg and "temper" it, so it doesn't end up with bits of egg.

Have you ever made Spaghetti Carbonara? Same process. If you have not, I highly suggest it. Its delicious and egg based so, will probably be handy for you!

There's a video in how to temper egg.
