Feeling a little overwhelmed

When I first started the program, I read through all of the information and thought to myself "I can do this, no problem". I realized last night that it was a very abstract concept to me at that time. My how time flies when you are having fun! I read through the program again last night and suddenly felt a little overwhelmed by it all as I am a little less than a month from getting a surgery date and now it's very real. I know deep down that I'll be ok, but still... Does everyone feel this way or am I worrying for nothing too soon? Thanks.

There is a lot to learn. Keep learning, that is important. Soon you will have a surgery date and then begins your pre-op liquid diet to start you on a weight loss path as well as helping out your liver.

Take the program in steps:

First there is the pre-op program, usually about 2 weeks of liquid diet. I used protein shakes and glucerna each day to consume my 1200 calorie per day limit. I used Premier protein shakes. All of this is readily available at local stores such as your pharmacy, Costco, and other locations. You can also order these products online from Costco and Amazon. It is a good idea to stock up on your protein shakes and liquids.

I had a full case of Isopure grape flavored ready for when I came home for the first week post op, which calls for clear liquids. Isopure is a clear liquid 8 ounces gives you 15 grams of protein.

For me the second week was all liquids. So, at this point I used Premier Protein Vanilla shakes. It also comes in Chocolate and I think Strawberry. A 11 ounce shake gives you 30 grams of protein. I also drank 1% milk, which is good for about 8 grams of protein in 8 ounces and a 100 calories. So, week 2 I used my Isopure, my Premier Protein Shakes and low fat milk.

Again, try a few of these products out now and then decide what you like or don't like and buy a case to have ready for post op.

Week three puree foods are introduced. I enjoyed pureed eggs and also pureed soups. Now, you begin to figure out what you can tolerate or NOT tolerate. Also, you only move on to the next stage of food if you feel ready. If you are still struggling after week 1 with the clear liquids stay at the week 1 level for another week. All of this should be in your information package.

Progression is critically important, but it is based on your readiness. At any stage if you are not ready simply do another week at whatever stage you are at.

After pureed foods come soft foods. Now, your horizon widens. You discover what foods you can tolerate and like. Believe it or not your tastes may change. Something you may have liked before surgery you will not like after surgery and vice versa.

Again, you will need your protein shakes or clear protein liquids to assure that you reach your minimum daily requirement for protein.

Just break it down into its parts. Each week when you are ready for the next stage, then study in greater detail the next stage.

Sure it is overwhelming when you are just starting out and you are pre-op. But, we all get through it and we are all here to support you step by step.

Best wishes,

Ralph

Yes, I can remember it got very real when I received the letter in the mail approving the surgery. I started having panic attacks in the middle of the night. Every morning I woke up swearing I was going to cancel surgery. I didn't. I'm glad.

I procrastinated bariatric surgery for 10 yrs. I was very afraid but my cardiologist finally talked me into going for it. I so wish I would have done this 10 yrs ago. Just be sure you have a GREAT surgeon. Do your research on him. Then.. Trust in your choice and have faith that he will take care of you and just relax. All will go well. You will be healthier and will enjoy life so much better. :) Good Luck

Yes, make sure your surgeon is one of the best and performed 100s of procedures already. Also, make sure you pick a hospital that is a center of excellence for bariatric surgery.

Thanks everyone! The surgeon I'm seeing is the only one within hundreds of miles of me that does bariatric surgery and he specializes in it. His office has its own weight management team - nurse practitioner, 2 dieticians, as well as works with a psych team, a physical therapist, and a sleep specialist all affiliated with the same hospital. I feel really confident in my team. I know it's just nerves and will probably get a little worse before it gets a lot better. I appreciate the support here.

What you are feeling is very normal. You are about to have surgery and have a major life transformation. The thing is we do this one day at a time. At 20 months post op this is still what I do. Have a support team established for before and after surgery. Find out as much as you can as information is knowledge. After surgery, visit the forum often and ask as many questions as you need to. We have all been through what ever it is you will be experiencing. Wishing you all the best on your upcoming surgery.

What you are feeling is quite normal. I went through the same thing. Panic attacks and all lol. Trust me even though I am here with all the nausea it is well worth it. I am glad that I had it done and it is the best thing that i could have done for me. Good luck and let us know how things are going.

Very normal, if your panic attacks get to bad though it never hurts to talk to your support people about it or go to some support groups to hear in person how others have delt with the before/after emotions that comes with this type of surgery.

I was turned down twice by the insurance company before they finally approved me and then scheduled surgery for November. A week before my surgery my primary care physician had me come in just to chat and do a quick exam. During this he found that I was having extra heartbeats and then wanted me to be cleared for surgery by a cardiologist. Surgery got cancelled until they could determine the seriousness of the heart issue. So, at this point, I asked myself if these were signs that I shouldn't do this. Anyway everything was cleared and I had the surgery on 1/27. I was nervous and changing my mind every hour up until the day in the waiting room at the hospital. The point of my very long story is that it is so normal to second guess and be nervous. The best advice that I can give is that it took a lot to get you to take this step In the first so be confident it is the right choice. It is a super hard and very brave decision to make. You will be fine. I am happy I went through with it. You will be healthier. Good luck to you!

thanks for the thread; my surgery is finally scheduled and I feel just like you Targyn. Surgery was all well and fine when surgery was an arbitrary date in the future, but now its real. I have tried stepping back a bit and started reviewing my old journal notes and reasons why I want this change in my life. It helps.

Sharpmind - congrats on getting a surgery date. It does feel crazy sometimes. Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm feeling better. I started watching youtube videos on what to buy to prepare for surgery and after. Everyone has different ideas on protein shakes, vitamins, etc... but I have the general idea. I have a pre-op class that I still have to go through where my dietician will go through all of this will me. I think by immersing myself in getting ready, it helped it to be not so overwhelming and got me started on making lists of what to start getting now. Not a lot, just a few essentials until I find out for sure what I need. I'm starting to get excited for a new life, for being healthier, for hopefully getting rid of my CPAP machine, and my acid reflux being gone for good without meds, I'm also looking forward to being out of pain. That has been the most tiring of it all. I'm sure I'll freak out again before I get to surgery, but for now all is well.
