Hi all, So I live in a small area about an hour from Jersey and the city of NY in NY state. In my small village (Johnson City), we have had now 17 deaths in the 3 mile radius of our home (we are within walking distance of two hospitals and 2 miles from a very large health facility that has specialists, labs and a walk in urgent care clinic across the street from a very large University. We have just under 300 positive cases and they've only just received enough tests to allow certain people to be tested in the county. I started with the Guthrie Clinic in PA (about 2 hours away from me) three months ago. The last visits with all the specialists there have been done via Zoom with each of them as well as the required support group and I have the next month scheduled the same.

I was given labs to do the week we shut down for the virus here and was unable to get these done. My Drs have been understanding of this but I know this has to be done. I've been having no problems in the weight loss aspect and learning to eat differently to keep up with the ins guidelines. The surgery is still looking to be done in Sept, as of the last meeting I had with the surgeon. He is still anxious to get things moving and it can be accurate as surgeries should be able to resume in two weeks in most parts of NY outside of the radius of the city. I wasn't sure of getting the surgery but now my husband and I are for my health problems. Still somewhat nervous and it's not helping during this time at all.

I'm going on the assumption that this thing isn't going away any time soon. NY city is showing a decline in numbers however, after easter weekend, we had an influx of people from New Jersey here and it's remained the same; more Jersey people going through. Our numbers in our little area are actually beginning to show this and are rising with our director of the local health dept warning this is just the beginning for our area now. I am nervous to go to the local center across from the college to get the labs done and worried even more about all the tests that are needing to be done in June (liver biopsy for my fatty liver, ulcer and gerd scans, sleep apnea testing, etc). I'm not certain how safe it is to have these done right now. As many people in my group, I am high-risk at 50 years with copd, diabetes and of course my being 278 lbs (300 lbs when this started).

How is anyone else getting these things done and how can you feel safe to have the surgery done; particularly with the threat of the second wave hitting around the time this surgery is supposed to be happening. Is anyone else confronting these issues and finding a solution or have any thoughts to what can be done in the safest way? Thank you really and sorry for the length of this; wanted to get my concerns across.

I am calling to start pre op scheduling this week. They’re starting to schedule elective surgery lab work slowly, so the hospitals don’t overcrowd. I’m in the St.Louis area, so we’re not as hard hit, but they’re being very cautious.

That's got to be very exciting! I'm sure they will be careful here too; just nervous. I called the Vestal Center to ask if they were accepting lab work right now and she responded, "yes, we are doing normal operations. Of course you take your own risk". It wasn't very re-assuring.

That really sounds like a pro forma disclaimer.. I would not worry about it a bit. If you have the opportunity to go in using your own personal protective equipment and get these blood test going, I would do it. They're not going to do anything to make you sick and if you're not sick already you're not going in there to make them sick.

Hi DawnaRose. I wanted to check in and see what you decided? Have you been able to go in for testing or are you waiting? This is a very scary time and I can understand your hesitation. I know things are different in NY/NJ as the hospitals are mainly at full capacity and the virus is more prominent there. I'm in Indiana and found out through my brother that they have a separate part of the hospital and labs set aside for non-covid related cases to help minimize exposure. Again, completely different here as we have not been hit as hard (so far) as NY. Just do what is most comfortable for you. If you have to wait, by all means, you can wait. Personally, I am thrilled I went through this process and definitely encourage you to move forward, but you have to move at a pace that you can live with. Keep us updated!

Hi, I just had my covid test done in the hospital parking lot in PA. My Drs were understanding of my hesitancy in being here in NY so they allowed for me to wait until I had all my other testing there in PA where my actual clinic and hospital is located (I drive a couple hours each time I go out). That area is very low and not hit very hard, they also assured me that they were very careful with the patients coming in. So, my next test in on Mon (endoscopy-not looking forward to having done this twice before but not so bad :). They are adding my lab tests that day. A week later I need to go in for results and normal DR Appointments but they also will submit my pre-cert paperwork (the only step left for the stipulations).

I've lost consistently the last 4 months to get below a 50 bmi (from 294 to 261 lbs). They said they are separating the patients by bmi to the two remote locations they are using for surgery. They changed the location my surgery will be scheduled. Actually they are really pushing to get it done asap after the ins 6 month time is up so we are looking at Aug 24 tentatively.

I'm going through a bit of apprehension now in reading some complications of others with the surgery. One night I actually got close to saying, 'no way, not doing this' but my family is pretty supportive and asked if I would regret that. Just a little nervous for the outcome.

Hi DawnRose, I truly understand your apprehension about your surgery. I was originally scheduled for mine on March 18th. I had a Dr's appt with the surgeon on the 16th for my final check up and last minute instructions. The 16th was a Monday and early in the am, I got a call that both my Dr's appt and surgery were cancelled. I was super ready and was on the pre-surgery diet. I really didn't know too much about COVID 19 at the time and was very confused. Well, within a couple of days, it was all over the news and our Governor was giving daily briefings. I live in NJ, right across the Hudson from NYC and in my Northern region the numbers very going up, up up. Meanwhile, I was given a new surgery date of April 29, which was also cancelled due to the cancelling of elective surgeries. Truthfully, I lost my enthusiasm and momentum and started questioning my having this surgery at my age. Maybe it's a sign, who knows. One of my reasons for having it, (besides good and better health) was to eliminate some of my daily pills (RX) I also hated the idea of being pre-diabetic and eventually going on insulin. A couple of times, I said maybe I should forget it, but know deep down, it's the right choice. My latest surgery date, (if all goes well) is August 17th. I could have had the last week of July, but the nurse said that the surgeon was going on vacation for the 1st two weeks of August. Even though, I know there will be a back up Drs. , I feel better knowing that he will be there, if I need him. So, it looks like we might both be having our surgeries in August. It'll be nice to see how we're both doing. Take care and good luck with your tests.
