Gatorade Zero vs: water

So ever since my surgery and they pushed Gatorade on me for hydration Post op, I have been drinking it daily ever since. Sometimes I don’t even get to my water. Does anyone else do this as well? I know it doesn’t have sugar but I’ve recently looked and I see that it does have sodium. Am I inadvertently drinking something that isn’t exactly healthy? What do y’all drink to get all your fluids in?

The sodium in gatorade is there to replace sweated-out electrolytes and in fairly small quantity (10% daily suggested?). It's completely harmless unless you already have high sodium / blood pressure issues and continue eating high sodium foods. If you are the type that reaches for the salt shaker every meal, go ahead and ask your doc about it; you probably have recent blood lab showing sodium levels.

Ah I see. Thanks so much for your help. My sodium is fine and thankfully I don’t have any high bp issues either. I feel much better about drinking Gatorade zero now.

Wow, I’ve never had water directly from a spring. Sounds amazing! Yeah I never drank Gatorade before surgery but now it seems to be one of the “treats” I enjoy. Sounds weird but I used to love Diet Coke and now I’ve replaced it with Gatorade. I feel like I should cut down and switch to more water though. Thanks for your message!

I must be the luck one here in the group since I have well water. It is nice that that I do not have to pay for water. In the summer it is nice to turn on the tap and the water is nice and cold. Oddly enough in the winter the water comes out at room temperature. I was a Diet Coke addict pre op drinking at least 8 per day and now it is just water and crystal light.

Yes you’re so lucky! I really need to drink more water. Even if the Gatorade is ok I’m sure water is best. Thanks for your input! :)

I do infused water... you can get pitchers or water bottles that make it easier. Plus then you are not getting artificial colors and sweeteners. To me, infused are more refreshing especially during the hot summer months. I do also like the MIO flavors, and those are one of the very few times I allow artificial sweeteners in my body. I do that more if I am going to be out in the heat because they have ones with vitamins and electrolytes.

Great idea! Thanks

I have the same problem. I did get a cirkul bottle which helps me get more water. But I drink a lot of sugar free Gatorade.
