I have been reading wonderful info on this site. Thank you! My surgery date is Oct. 15 and I am eager to get it done! I think I am ready and understand what is going to happen and how I might feel afterwards. I have a weird question, though. I want to be as comfortable as possible in the hospital, which would usually mean regular pajama pants and top, but not sure about wearing an elastic waist right after surgery. What do you suggest taking for the hospital stay in terms of clothes? Thank you!

Good question! I would think you won't want anything constricting at your waist or belly for some while.

There are others here who can better answer your question from experience.

I would take a few pairs of loose fitting sweat pants, shorts or pajama bottoms and use the hospital gowns over them. If you have loose fitting bottoms with a drawstring waist, that would be perfect!!! You are going to be walking a lot after surgery and don't want to be "exposed" while walking in the hallway :) :) :) You are going to be slightly bloated from the gas you will have so you don't want to be restricted by a snug waistband of any sort. You will also have a drain and need to wear loose clothing to accomodate it so as not to pinch the tube closed.

Thank you. That makes sense. I don't want to be wandering the hospital halls in a nightie, but still want to be comfortable. I am eager to follow everyone, what a great group!
 
HI Annie,

I did not want anything constricting my abdomen after surgery so I took a muu muu in with me. So comfy. Undies or pull down pants would have just gotten in the way with IV fluids and getting up to the bathroom. Good luck on your journey. As an aside my center gave us a list of what to bring with us. Maybe yours will too.
 
Muu muus and other type gowns are great for walking but they tend to twist when you get in and out of bed and also are a bit cumbersome when it comes time for the nurse to look at your incisions or change your dressings. In order to get at the surgical site you either have to get out of bed to lift them up or somehow scoot the long gown up far enough while in bed to get at the incisions.
 
One thing I did that worked well was to wear a second hospital gown "backwards" over the first gown. This kept my backside well covered while walking and didn't present any issues with being able to get at the incisions or while using the bathroom.
 
I brought way to much and ended up staying in the hospital gowns. Easy access as Pat said. When walking around, I used two to cover front and back. Don't forget your flip flops.
 
Great suggestions....I am not there as to the date of surgery, but have been told it will be sometime in January 2013. That was a really good question as what to wear after surgery. I have written down some suggestion so I wont forget.
