Brand new and ready to learn more

Hello all,

Just got my surgical date, 11/26/2013.
I cleared all medical clearances with 5 gold stars, including a cardiac cath, OUCH..
My husband is very supportive and is my main cheerleader and supporter.
Looking for folks to talk to, learn from and share experiences with.

Congrats! It is an exciting and scary time. I had the sleeve gastrectomy almost 6 months ago and I'm so happy that I did. I've lost 65 pounds since surgery and a total of 95 altogether. The most I had been able to lose at one time ever was 30 pounds, so it definitely works. I have to make sure that I'm eating protein, vegetables, and fruit for the most part to make sure I get in the nutrients and vitamins that I need.

My husband is very supportive too, so I'm lucky. He really wanted me to improve my diabetes, so I would grow old with him. My blood sugars have been in the normal range for about a month, so it worked for that too.

Best wishes! Okieatheart

Congrats on your weight lose..
How are you feeling?
Do you have more energy?
How is your diabetes?
Your husband sounds like an awesome man...

Feeling great, thanks.

I do have more energy. I used to get the closest parking place and sometimes wouldn't go somewhere if I thought I would have to walk very far. Now I park farther away and don't mind the walk. I don't get out of breath like I used to. I also take the two flights of stairs at work at my second job where I used to ride the elevator. I would actually plan my trips upstairs or to the basement at the house so I wouldn't have to walk up the stairs, but I don't even think about it now.

I am feeling really good. I actually have a lap for my 13 month old granddaughter to sit on and I can get down in the floor and play with her. It is a lot of fun. I used to dread going to the mall with my daughter and she loves to shop, but now it is fun again. My husband is a great guy! He loved me through the heavy years and I know he is going to continue loving the changes too.

I'm only on Metformin once a day now (750) where I had been taking 1000 twice a day, 1 Actos 15 a day, Prandin 3X a day, and Byetta injections twice a day. This morning my blood sugar was on the low side at 79. It has been in the 90's for the last few weeks, so it has really improved. I used to run about 160 or higher in the mornings.

When I was in the hospital, pretty much everything they gave me were sweet drinks or jello which kind of nauseated me, so I mostly drank water. My surgeon came in the second day and told me that I had to get down 64 oz. of fluids before he would release me. I thought he was kind of crazy since I could only sip a little at a time. I'm not sure if he was just trying to motivate me or what, but I went home without accomplishing that. I was in the hospital two nights. I only had one incision that bothered me after a few days so I took the pain medicine for a couple of weeks or so for that. Otherwise, I didn't have any problems. I was ready to have something different to eat by the 3rd week when I started soft foods. From Day 1 through 5 it was clear liquids, then days 5-27 it was full liquids, then soft diet. I started the general diet two months after surgery. Is that what they will have you do? I hope you have a dietician and physical therapist you are working with along with the surgeon. I had a great program.

I hope everything goes well for you!

I have to start a full liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery and my surgeon has clear liquids day 1, full liquid day 2-15 and purees/soft foods day 16-37(or 60) and then maintenance after that.

That is fantastic about your diabetes. Hopefully with another 7 months out you will be able to drastically reduce your meds again!!

WOW you have done great.. My husband is the same way.. He loves me, the inner me, he loves me fat, skinny, sideways and all the way around.
I bet it is such a joy to be able to play with and hold your grand baby, :)..
As for the post surgical diet mine sounds identical to your, post surgical through day 7 water, ice chips, broth, tea and crystal light
Days 8 thru 14: 1.5 oz pureed proteins + 1 oz pureed fruits for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Days 15 thru 28 I will start soft foods such as eggs, cheese, dark moist meats
