Hi everyone!

In December after I met with a surgeon, I joined this group to gain more insight into weight loss surgery. At that time, I was not ready to commit. I am happy to say that after considerable research, thinking and discussions with various people I have decided that am ready to begin the process. My surgeon's office will be contacting me next week to start everything. I'm excited and scared at the same time. During these last two months, I have come to grips with the reality that I cannot do this alone and that I have an addiction that needs to be addressed. I didn't want to think that I had a problem and that I could handle this myself. I am frustrated with myself, but think I now am beginning to deal positively with that frustration by taking this first step. I enjoy reading the many tips from those of you that have already started this journey. I am sure I will have questions as I begin my journey. Thanks for listening!!

Hi Maria, you have made a great decision!!!

We are all here to help each other through surgery and after as we are dropping weight. I know weight loss surgery can help you successfully become a healthier, happier person. I have been where you are now and it took me a good long while to decide to go ahead with surgery but when I decided, I committed 100% and lost a great deal of weight. I was severely overweight for many years and bariatric surgery is the only thing that helped me.

Good luck to you. Enjoy your weight loss journey. It's a trip of a lifetime :)

I'm having surgery just don't know when yet ..I have been big all my life and I'm tired of it so I have decided on the surgery..I have many medical issues that I know won't go away unless I have the surgery then adventally they will go away...Im 51 now by the time I'm 52 I want to be down 100lbs..I have the bundle physical coming next friday the 6th
how long does this take .....
Im excited about having the surgery...

Hi Nancy! WELCOME to the Forum!!!

How long it takes depends on primarily your insurance. Some insurance, including mine, wanted a 6 month, monthly visit to my primary care physician, while on a strict diet, and exercise program. The resultant to be submitted to the insurance as well as test results. Some insurance companies don't require it. Most bariatric surgeon's have an insurance person in the office who can help you with the ins and outs of the insurance.

I have been very overweight since I was about 20 yrs old. Over the years I yoyo'd up and down with my weight but as I got older and had health problems I became less active and gained even more weight. I had surgery at 64 yrs old and my life has been wonderful ever since. I feel so good, my health issues have disappeared. I wish I would have done this years ago.

Bariatric surgery is exciting yet a little scary too. This is normal to feel. Laparoscopic surgery is so much easier and safer than the old type of surgery. Pain is very minimal.

I have been thinking about having this done for a few year's and don't know why I didn't just do it then,,I think me wanting to have this done is when I started having bladder issue's I saw a speacialist and the Dr suggested that I lose 100 lbs yah right I can't even lose a 1 lb let alone 100 so he suggested them to me just needed the push to do it and finally did..i have cut back on what I eat...Drink the protein drinks..eat less,,I weigh out everything and put in my phone app...Exercise more often...instead of chips or junk i eat an apple or drink a smoothie that i make in the morning but only drink 3 oz...and water through out the day..Stopped drinking diet pepsi which is my favorite drink..

Hi Nancy, My primary care doctor first talked to me about getting weight loss surgery when I was 53 yrs old. It took me 10 full years to decide to go ahead with it and my Cardiologist is the one who talked me into it. I thought I could do it on my own if I just tried hard enough. Yes I lost some weight but I always went back to my old way of eating. That's why I'm so glad I got the RNY bypass because I needed all the help I could get. The weight comes off so fast it's easy to stay motivated and because the stomach holds 2 ounces after surgery, it is easy to feel full after a tiny amount of food. I couldn't be happier! I'm sure you will be pleased too.

I forgot to say I had terrible bladder issues before surgery. I had to wear a pad all the time and I would wet myself when I got out of bed in the morning or anytime my bladder got partially full. Now my pads are gone. No leaks or floods or dribbles. It's so fine not to have to worry about it anymore!
 
First please post all your profile information.

This way we can see where you are at and the progress you will make over time.

Second, welcome. Making a decision to proceed is a major decision.

I know my initial look into WLS surgery back in the 90s or even early 2000s lead me to back away from it for so many reasons.

However, the surgery has advanced. The approach to supporting a WLS patient has dramatically improved, etc., etc.,

I finally took the plunge, had the gastric bypass and as I look back now I wonder why I didn't do it sooner. The answer is simple. I WASN'T READY !!!

Many of us go through this cycle until we finally do make the "right" decision and proceed.

Two key factors, make sure your Doctor is a Bariatric Center of Excellence Doctor with plenty of experience and success.

Make sure your hospital is also a Bariatric Center of Excellence. These two factors assure your journey will be successful and without incident.
