GERD and Hiatal Hernia

I am new here..... I have had severe GERD for 20+ years and now have a hiatal hernia as well as cellular damage in my esophagus because of the constant acid. My Dr suggested the Roux en Y to cure the GERD and hernia. I was very much against this idea at the beginning, but after reading many, many stories of others that have had it done for weight loss, I am actually looking forward to it now and have started the process. I had my first appointment two weeks ago with the dietician and I am hoping to have surgery by June-ish. I weigh 265lbs and although I am looking forward to the possibility of the GERD finally being gone, I am also looking forward to the weight loss and being active again. I know the sleeve will make my GERD worse and it is not an option for me. But, I was wondering if anyone else here had the gastric bypass for GERD / hiatal hernia reasons and if it cured the issue? Have you had good results with it in regards to GERD? My stomach is so miserable every single day and I am looking for a light at the end of the tunnel.

Welcome Sirius ! I too had Gerd for many years . I had a Hiatal hernia taken care of the same time I had the Roux en Y last November and haven’t had Gerd since. If you scroll through other posts and forums you’ll find a lot of people who can help you along the way .

Yes, I had RNY after 2 failed hiatal hernia surgeries, I also suffered from GERD and gastroparesis. I had the hiatal hernia fixed at the same time, and also a partial gastrectomy. I wasn’t obese to start with, but I have lost a fair bit of weight and all the issues above have gone. I did have a tough time though, and a lot of complications, but everyone is different. At nearly 9 months out, I am finally getting back to normal. I would advise you to do a lot of research, it’s not easy, but it does appear to solve the problem. Good luck!

That sounds wonderful! I've had GERD for so long that when they mentioned being able to cure it with bypass, I was instantly skeptical. I honestly don't even know what a day without GERD would feel like. Lol Thank you for your input! :)

I've listened to and read quite a few stories about people's experiences with the different types of bariatric surgeries. This whole thing seems like a pretty big step and I have never had surgery before. Sorry to hear you had a lot of complications! But happy to hear you are getting back to normal and your GERD / hiatal hernias are better. Thank you for your input! :)
