Had my very 1st appointment......and survived!!

I had my very 1st appointment with my surgeon and program coordinator. For some reason, even though I was excited, I was really nervous of the unexpected too!! I've read ALOT and knew basically what to expect but I just had the case of the butterflies in my stomach! As I was called back, they took my weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, O2 level, and temp. All was basically well, blood pressure and pulse was a bit high, but that could of been nerves causing that! So after the nurse took me to a patient room, she went over the forms I filled out with my history, meds, etc. and said the doctor will be in shortly. As I sat and patiently waited for about 5 minutes(not long but seemed like eternity), those butterflies were up in my throat now and I had no idea why I was so nervous with something I want so badly? As he opened the door, he immediately shook my hand and said, "let's go to my office where it's more comfortable". Did it show that I was scared or was this a common routine done for everyone? I don't know but I felt better then for some reason almost talking like we knew each other for years when really it was the 1st time one on one with him! I really like him and trust him, was my thoughts quietly to myself. He explained the sleeve and the RNY and left it to me to decide even with his opinion being either is very well with results. I picked the RYN because of the greatest amount of weight loss success and willing to be on a multi vitamin for life! So once I gave the okay, he shook my hand again and said, "okay, let's get started" and took me over to the program coordinator who I already knew from being in the same graduating class together and remembering how sweet of a person she was to everyone(small world, huh)! She also went through the procedure and had beautiful results but it's still a working progress after reaching your goal! This is only a "tool", all the work is up to me to get there with this tool and be successful as well! She set me up with 12 week requirement from insurance which involves seeing a dietician, a nutritionist, an exercise physiologist, behavior psychologist, support group, a sleep study done, blood work, EKG, and of course, and a nicotine urine test which I knew ahead of time and very confident I will pass it. Seems a little overwhelming on paper but everything is pretty much spread out and do able!! I'm looking forward to meeting all these helpful team players to help me on my journey of a new life! They are all here to teach me what I need to know and I can't be thankful enough for their encouragement to show me the way!! Wish me luck as I wish all of you the best in your own journeys!!

I think bariatric surgeons are non-judgmental. Most other physicians see the fat person first, and tend to blame all your complaints/problems on weight.

oh thanks so much , your post is just what i needed , as we all have read up on the by pass and sleeve, just knowing what to expect is a good thing. thank you so much for sharing, it puts my mind at ease , i go tomorrow for my first baratric seminar, to get my journey started.
looking to hear about your journey as well... :) we can do this !

I agree Karenina!! You know they must have a heart of gold to want to do this kind of work! They see and truly understand the struggles we have and want to help!!

You are very welcome tjhiers!! I am very happy to share my experience with others in hope that it might help others as well as myself! I will also be happy to hear what your experiences are as well!! I began with attending a seminar with 60 people(August 29th) and then they check our insurances to see first before even being called for a consult. They called 2 days later with 1st approval and gave me a consult date which was almost a month later but it gave me the time to read more and more! My 1st appointment which is a teaching class with the dietician is on 10/4 so I'm super excited about it! Stay tuned and I'll make sure to post about it! Best wishes to you as well!! Keep us all posted as you go through your journey of a new life!! :)
