Has anyone had Duodenal Switch surgery?

Hello All,
I am going to be having DS soon and was wondering if any one has been through this surgery. I am 48, with several obesity related medical conditions as well as other pertinent medical problems not related to my weight. Currently I am disabled and hope that this surgery will improve my health and quality of life both physically as well as mentally. I have joined this sight in hopes of becoming friends with others who have or will be experiencing the same operation. I am assuming that this is a rare operation or fairly new one, for I haven't found any info on here regarding this procedure? thanks, hope there is someone out there, would like to know how the surgery went and how you're doing post surgery.

Hello, and welcome.

I am having the Duodenal Switch done Feb. 19th. It is a bit harder to find info on the DS than the other surgeries I think. But I have been able to come up with quite a few places. I would be happy to discuss it with you :).

Thanks Darkpoeticangel,
What surgery did you have, I first pursued the lap band as that was the one my primary doctor originally recommended and both my sisters had . But I was told my BMI was to large for that surgery and was sent to University of Chicago where the doctors there decided this was the route for me and I agreed after hearing their point of view but am a bit scared of all risks and recovery time also.

Hello zzvazquez,
Thanks so much for replying. How exciting that your surgery is coming up so soon. Good Luck, I hope it goes well with a quick recovery. March 12th I go for my PREP Class and then they will give me a surgery date. I am so impatient, it's driving me crazy waiting. When I began my quest to have weight loss surgery I was first referred by my cardiologist to a lap band doctor. And I wasted a lot of time doing what I thought was getting everything done before my appointment to meet all the requirements to only be told my BMI was to large for this surgery. This doctor then referred me to the University of Chicago where the doctors decided what surgery I should have. I basically had to start all over on what was required and then had to do a 6 month diet for my insurance which will be completed Mar. 1st. How long was your journey from beginning to your surgery date?

Lap. Bypass and it was really easy the surgery and the healing time is pretty fast. Talk to him if you do not feel alright with what you are having. I wanted the sleeve but took the bypass. Both work well. Just a lot more risk involved in the switch, but you do lose faster I think. But I am happy where I am so. Just know it will take longer to get over it.

I had the sleeve, but know someone who had the DS. It was the right choice for her. She was close to 600 pounds and had to lose 100 pounds before surgery, which she did. She had the surgery and her recovery time was longer, but she is doing great. I think she is down to 350 pounds and still losing. This has changed her life. She is completely mobile and able to care for herself and children independently now. It sounds like after seeing 2 surgeons they feel this will be the most successful for you. Wishing you all the best and let us know how you are doing.
