Hello,
I'm new to this support group. I have been reading for a couple of days and hopefully I will be able to get some answers, suggestions and of course some needed support. I'm 61 years old and considering a Gastric Bypass, but initially I thought the Gastric Sleeve. Now I have been heavy all my life, and there is such a thing as big boned! My husband is against the surgery completely, but said he will support me no matter my decision. I'm going through the process now, trying to get the insurance approvals, blood tests, and all the stuff. I came out of my mother heavy and have been teased and all that crap all of my life, and the reason why I have decided on the surgery is because I am on a 1-year plateau, I was over 300 pounds and for the last year, I have not lost but a few here, then gained again. Obviously, something more needs to be done. Why at my age would I want such a life changing surgery? I have to lose 40 pounds so I can get a new hip. Yes, none of the ortho surgeons in my region will touch my hip without losing 40 pounds. So I swim twice a week, and started looking into hiring a personal trainer for more strength training that doesn't hurt my hip but helps build muscle. But remember, muscle weighs more than fat does, did you know that? So I am not sure what to do at this point. I've lost some weight, a few pounds trying to follow the Pre-Op diet, and the surgeon wants me to lose some before surgery which seems like an oxymoron. How or what made you want to do this surgery? And am I being selfish at my age to finally get a quality of life with a hip? I would love to be on the ground playing with my grand kids but I can't get back up due to my hip. So my rationale is, this surgery, recover, then hip replacement, quality of life. Am I okay?
Thanks for your input.
